Learning Intentions for the Day

Participants will leave with… …an understanding of what a Carnegie Learning classroom looks like and feels like. …an understanding of the essential components of a collaborative classroom. …an established process for daily instructional planning. …the ability to make daily instructional decisions with the Carnegie Learning text. …explain how the mathematics develops throughout the textbooks. …a knowledge of the resources available to teachers and students and the intent behind each of them. …the ability to create and manage an effective Carnegie Learning lab.

Learning Goals and Scales

Level 3- Applying The teacher can create lessons within an identified unit that include rigor, coherence and focus to ensure success for all students.

  • Lessons are built upon a clearly defined goal

accompanied by a scale.

  • Lessons are organized to build on previous

information and for connections to be made.

  • Lessons are organized to move students from

understanding information to application in real-world situations.

  • Lessons are aligned to content standards and
  • rganized in the way in which content should be

sequenced.

  • Lessons include available resources as identified on

district focus maps.

  • Lessons include accommodations and modifications

that will be made to address needs of all students. Level 3- Applying When instructing, I will use effective instructional, management, and classroom curriculum design strategies and monitor the desired effect.

  • Establishes and communicates learning goals.
  • Has established classroom rules and procedures and

acknowledges adherence or lack of adherence of the rules.

  • Uses appropriate strategies to help students interact

with new knowledge, deepen knowledge, and help students generate and test hypotheses.

  • Uses appropriate strategies to keep students

engaged.

  • Able to adjust instruction in regards to pacing and

sequence based on the needs of the students.

Look-fors: What are they??

  • Focus on “Teacher Behaviors:” and “Student Behaviors:”
  • Think about how Brittany may have planned for this lesson-

○ What mathematical concepts did she focus on? ○ How did she keep the lesson moving at a good pace? ○ What questions was she asking? ○ How were students interacting with each other?

The Collaborative Classroom

Defining, Creating & Facilitating Groups

Classroom Look-Fors

What do I need to do to prepare for success in the classroom? **Focus on prep: *before school starts *weeks 1 and 2 *weeks 3 and beyond

On sticky notes, record your TOP 5 most important things to do during the first weeks of school

  • 1. Physical Layout of the room and Classroom Tools
  • 2. Classroom Policies and Procedures
  • 3. Purposeful Planning for COLLABORATION
slide-5
SLIDE 5

Gallery Walk

Use sticky notes to write your top 5 most important things you need to prepare to have a successful start to the school year. On each piece of chart paper (Before school/Week 1/Week 2/Week 3 and Beyond), post where you think the procedure or expectation would be taught or established. For example, test retake procedure will need to be taught after the first quiz/test, so would likely go on the “Week 3 and beyond” poster.

The importance of high-quality planning

Worthwhile tasks are not sufficient for effective teaching. Teachers must also decide what aspects of a task to highlight, how to organize and orchestrate the work of the students, what questions to ask to challenge those with varied levels of expertise, and how to support students without taking over the process of thinking for them and thus eliminating the

  • challenge. –NCTM Principles and Standards 2000

Quick Tips for Pacing

1. Read “Quick Tips for Pacing” on your own, highlighting/underline/make notes on critical points to you

  • 2. Discuss as a table
  • a. What stuck out to you?
  • b. What did you have questions

about?

Daily pacing

Course 1- M1T1L1- Taking Apart Numbers and Shapes: Area Models and Rectangles - pages 9 -16 student text (TAB 2) Course 2- M1T1L1- Pi: The Ultimate Ratio: Exploring the Ratio of Circle Circumference to Diameter- Pages 9 -20 student text (TAB 3) Course 3- M1T1L1- Patty Paper, Patty Paper: Introduction to Congruent Figures- Pages 7-20 student text (TAB 4)

Do the math in the lesson as if you were a student. (10 min.)

  • Keep “teacher moves” in mind as you are

working.

  • What would you expect from students for

each answer?

  • What problems might need additional

practice opportunities?

Planning for a lesson

  • Keeping the standards and learning goal

(and time limits) in mind…. ■ What do you want students to know and be able to do by the end of the class period? ■ What pieces of the lesson are important to highlight whole group? ■ What questions might students have on each part of the lesson? What types of student responses might you get?

  • Use “Quick Tips for Pacing” as a guide

MATHia software Blended Learning using Carnegie resources

What is Blended Learning?

The definition of blended learning is a formal education program in which a student learns: (1) at least in part through online learning, with some element of student control over time, place, path, and/or pace; (2) at least in part in a supervised brick-and-mortar location away from home; (3) and the modalities along each student’s learning path within a course or subject are connected to provide an integrated learning experience.
