  • “In virtue of their baptism, all the members of the People

All the baptized, whatever their position in the Church or their level of instruction in the faith, are agents of evangelization" (#120).

Disciple = Learner

comes from the Greek word, mathetes, and literally means “learner.” “No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher” (Luke 6:40). Discipleship is the life-long learning process of becoming like Jesus.

MISSIONARY

slide-32
SLIDE 32

Our life of faith is service AND

  • witness. As disciples we are engaged

in justice AND evangelization. This kind of life flows from an encounter with Christ’s presence that draws into deep relationship with the community gathered in his name.

Tom East, “Disciple Building Youth Ministry”, YouthMinistryAccess.org, 2015

Page 4

slide-33
SLIDE 33

By using the term missionary with discipleship, Pope Francis challenges us to move from a missionary approach where a

  • nly a few people participate to a place

where everyone is involved; from supporting missions once a year on “Missionary Sunday” to being missionaries every hour of every day; from something that happens in remote parts of the world to something that happens everywhere. In other words, everyone, every day, and everywhere! (Page 5) Frank Mercadante, “Forming Missionary Disciples”, YouthMinistryAccess.org, 2016.

Page 4

slide-34
SLIDE 34

The main focus of missionary discipleship is to build healthy and holy relationships. At times, this may call us into conflict or situations that make us uncomfortable. We must remember that those are the “risks” that come with “walking the talk.” We must remember that we are not alone and God calls us to not be afraid on this journey because we are doing his will.

RESEARCH

How do youth continue to practice their Catholic faith as young adults?

Pages 9 – 10

slide-45
SLIDE 45

MANY YOUTH DON’T CONTINUE

“Taking a break from religion” is, in the view of many, a normal part of emerging adult life. Now that they have jumped through all the major “hoops” of Catholic faith, they can settle back and put off further religious practices until marriage and having children bring it to the fore

  • f their lives again.
slide-46
SLIDE 46

COMMITTED AND PRACTICING EMERGING ADULTS WERE

  • well formed in Catholic faith and practice as children,
  • whose faith became personally meaningful and practiced as

teenagers

  • whose parents (reinforced by other supportive Catholic adults) were

the primary agents cultivating that lifelong formation.

slide-47
SLIDE 47

EMERGING ADULT FAITH PRACTICE

  • First, teens must have strong bonds to religiously committed and

supportive family and friends.

  • Believing in divine miracles as a teen and having personal religious

experiences.

  • The third and final set of influential factors is regular religious

behaviors and practices. (personal and communal)

slide-48

…Catholic youth who become more adept at being Catholic like attending Mass or Sunday school more will continue to engage in these behaviors during the transition to emerging adulthood.

ENGAGE YOUTH IN THE CULTURE OF ENCOUNTER

slide-60
SLIDE 60

ENCOUNTER CHRIST AND THOSE THAT CHRIST LOVES.

"He wants bishops to be part of this culture of encounter — encountering Christ and therefore encountering those that Christ loves. Once you have the relationship, then the ideas make

  • sense. Otherwise, it's a debating society. So you

don't start with the idea. You start with a person and relationship."

disciples changes everything…” (page 80.)

WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO?

  • Develop targeted ministries
  • Engage families and see parents in new ways
  • Engage lots of adult disciples
  • Focus on spiritual growth
  • Help youth do what disciples do – and get good at it!
  • Touch their hearts – make it personal
  • Provide multiple contact points
  • Listen and include
  • Go where youth are – including technology
  • Engage youth in mission!

Ephesians 3:14-19

For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that he may grant you in accord with the riches of his glory to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
