Tonight’s Discussion

  • Looking back at the graduate profile and your reflections on the student experience, what

parts of the academic plan most support this? What will be challenging for students?

  • One of our goals for the MS is to build alignment within the feeder pattern. What

elements of this program plan resonate for you? What else should we consider? Preparing for Next Week’s Discussion: Next week we will review the information in the appendix on clubs, sports, schedules, as well as discuss the principal hiring process in more detail. In preparation, please consider the following key questions:

  • What else do you, other parents, teachers, and community members want to know about

the New North program? Please note specific questions or topics of interest in your capture sheet.

  • What are the some of the successful traits and characteristics of the ideal school leader for

New North MS?

24

Discussion

In groups of two or three, please discuss the following. We will next share together as a larger group, time permitting

DCPS offers various instructional models to support students for whom English is a second language

The Language Acquisition Division at DCPS offers a variety of service delivery models for supporting the diverse language and cultural backgrounds of ELs enrolled at each middle school. The delivery model used at a particular school depends upon the unique needs of the students and the resources available as programs and models may vary from school to school.

Content Based Sheltered Content Programs Inclusion/Collaborative Teaching Dual Language Newcomer Programs

slide-41
SLIDE 41

New North MS Planning and Program Update New North MS Planning and Program Update 41

DCPS offers various instructional models to support students for whom English is a second language

In each specific program below, ELs receive explicit instruction in academic language specific to content areas as well as language to participate in grade-appropriate argumentation, discourse, purpose, and explanation. The specific program will vary depending on the proficiency level of the student and the program offered at the student’s school.

Content Based

  • ESL courses that include English as second language instruction. Students can receive WL credit for these courses
  • Academic content and English languages skills are taught simultaneously.

Sheltered Content Programs – Currently recommended for New North MS

  • Teach academic grade level content to English Learners in strategic ways that make the subject matter comprehensible.
  • Instruction is adapted to ELs English proficiency levels, curriculum is modified, and prior knowledge is activated.

Inclusion/Collaborative Teaching

  • Collaborative teaching between a general education teacher, special education teacher as needed and a bilingual/ESL teacher in

either full class, small group or 1:1 instruction

Dual Language

  • Content area and literacy are offered in two languages.
  • In this model, all students develop communication and literacy skills in their native language while simultaneously learning a second

language.

Newcomer Programs – Current Recommendation – Currently recommended for New North MS

  • For students who are new to the United States.

‘New North’ MS will have self-contained special education programs that will open and grow with the rest of the school

DCPS proposes to open duplicate special education classes that currently exist at the ECs. These classes will grow up as they phase out at the ECs along with the rest of the middle grades at each school.

SY18-19 SY19-20 SY20-21 Education Campuses with self- contained middle school classrooms Self-contained classrooms remain; no changes Self-contained classrooms remain with only 7th and 8th graders Self-contained classrooms remain with just 8th graders

  • r moves completely

to the MS* ‘New North’ MS Not yet open – still under construction Opens with 6th graders including self-contained classrooms Serves all 6 and 7th graders including self-contained classrooms

*A decision for the out years will be based on enrollment projections for the following school year. If most students in the self-contained programs are 8th graders during the EC’s final year of having 8th graders, then the program should stay. If not, the program can move to the MS.
