WELCOME!

Input provided by the public will help to develop a vision for Nanaimo’s Waterfront Walkway. We invite the public to share their ideas, concerns and any other items they would like to be considered throughout the design of this walkway. Public waterfront walkways are linear public corridors that

  • ffer recreational opportunities, commuter connections,

public art, shared public spaces and natural amenities and can connect historic sites, neighborhoods, and retail

  • areas. They have the ability to attract residents and

visitors alike. WHAT IS A

PUBLIC WATERFRONT WALKWAY?

ENGAGEMENT OBJECTIVES

During this stage of engagement and planning, we want to:

HOW DOES SHARING A VISION HELP GUIDE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE WATERFRONT WALKWAY?

A vision is an idea of a desired future, and provides a framework to guide decision-making as it relates to the design of the future route. A strong vision should:

WHAT ROLE WILL THE VALUES YOU SHARE WITH US PLAY?

We will use these values to help guide the decisions required to design a walkway that reflects what is important to the residents of Nanaimo. Here are some examples of different values that could relate to the Waterfront Walkway:

>> Natural >> Community space >> Inclusive >> Accessible >> Attractive >> Playful >> Beautiful >> Movement >> Recreation

DEVELOPING A COMMUNITY VISION

How would you like the Waterfront Walkway to look? What would attract you to it most and how would you like to use it?

Please share your ideas with us.

Understand which values are important to you Hear your vision for the future of the Waterfront Walkway

Your feedback will be used to draft the vision for the waterfront and help guide the design of the walkway.

How would you use this section of the walkway?

Things we need to consider:

Currently pedestrian only pathway Riparian property rights Limited space Archaeological impacts Geotechnical conditions (slope stability, etc.) Impacts to existing trees Connections and accessibility to the pathway Stewart Avenue intersection

Opportunities to keep in mind:

Provision of adequate space for multi-use pathway Connection from Departure Bay Beach to BC Ferries Terminal Potential to make improvements to Kinsmen Park and improve accessibility and connection to Departure Bay Centennial Park Beach access Boardwalk to minimize environmental impacts and avoid other constraints Incorporation of Green Shores design Overall wayfinding improvements and community connectivity

2

How would you use this section of the walkway?

Things we need to consider:

Suncor Overpass is low Right of way needed for walkway Limited space High pedestrian/vehicle volumes in summer months at boat launch and summer markets Existing pathway is narrow and in poor condition in certain sections Geotechnical conditions (slope stability, etc.) Some segments considered final design Few public access points

Opportunities to keep in mind:

Connection from Departure Bay to Downtown Nanaimo Retail revitalization Extend bicycle friendly pathway Wayfinding Interim routes until property can be acquired Observation opportunities for marine activities and lookout locations for Newcastle Island Connections to marina and yacht club Potential for improvements through future development

How would you use this section of the walkway?

Things we need to consider:

Currently pedestrian oriented route (not multi-use) No cycling connections currently Popular route year-round, accommodation of all users could be a challenge Walkway constrained by adjacent businesses (patios, displays, signs, etc.) Private property and privacy impacts Geotechnical considerations at McGregor Park

Opportunities to keep in mind:

Segment design considered final, rehabilitation opportunities where needed Extend existing promenade pathway and improve public spaces Improve cycling connection and facilities along Front Street Improve connection to Gabriola Ferry Terminal Connections to waterfront businesses Observation opportunities to waterfront, marine activities, businesses, and lookout locations
