Vision Statement: To develop students who are curious and creative. To mentor them to develop personal initiative and sustained effort to reach high academic goals. To encourage critical thinkers who seek knowledge and possess technological competence and collaborative skills. To foster a sense of community by embracing differences and acting with kindness. Mission Statement: A KGA 5th grader is a deep, critical, and creative thinker who makes connections across content areas, within content areas, and within his/her world. A KGA 5th grader is an independent thinker and learner who seeks out the advice of experts when necessary and is seeking to learn from others. Fifth graders reflect everyday, and learn from their successes as well as their mistakes. They are not afraid to fail or afraid to ask questions or not know something.

Social Studies-Where did we come from? Where are we going?

Integrated into English Language Arts and other content areas

American/World History A study of American and World History is integral for students to analyze the human experience through time, to recognize the relationships of events and people, and to interpret significant patterns, themes, ideas, beliefs, and turning points in American and world history. Civics/Government The goal of the civics strand is to develop the knowledge and skills for informed, responsible participation in public

  • life. They will understand the importance of each person as an individual with human and civil rights and our shared heritage in the

United States. Geography The goal of the geography strand is to provide an understanding of the human and physical characteristics of the Earth’s places and regions and how people of different cultural backgrounds interact with their environment. Economics The goal of the economics strand is to enable students to make reasoned judgments about both personal economic questions and broader questions of economic policy.

Grading Philosophy

Student Advocates: Communication is key between students and teachers. Late Work Policy: 80% is the highest a student will receive. Again, students can advocate for themselves through communication with teachers. Late work is expected after one week after the due date. Resubmissions: Teachers may provide students with the opportunity to resubmit assignments that they earned a 70% or less on. The highest grade the student can recieve is an 80%. All resubmissions and late work must be turned in ten days prior to the end of each quarter. Absent for Assignments: Students are still expected to complete assignments if they are absent. Students can check Edmodo and communicate with teachers regarding what they missed.
