Home Choice Academy’s 1st draft of our updated VISION We work together with families to develop independent thinkers who have: • Confidence • Competence • Choices • Creativity • Curiosity • Critical thinking And engage with rigorous and challenging content, persevere now and in the future as conscientious contributors of society!

Home Choice Academy • We are a part of the Evergreen Public School System! • We are publicly funded through the state as an Alternative Learning Experience for grades K-8. • We are striving for coherent and intentional instruction in class as well as at home by partnering with you in a family-oriented environment.

  4. Assessments • We are accountable for the learning of each student. • We do have periodic district and state assessments throughout the year. • In order for us to closely partner with each of you as the learning coach and your student it is of Utmost Importance that we have 100% participation in assessments. Purpose of Assessments: • To show what a student has learned • To give a snapshot of where they are currently performing • To provide additional information about any gaps in learning so we can monitor and adjust our instruction

What is new this year? • Increase in instructional time to 27.75 hours/week (State) • Two days per week in class instruction (K-5) • One day per week in class instruction 6,7,8 (same as last year) • Enrichment opportunities at the end of your child/ ren’s instructional day/s. • Shift on the content and process of instruction within the classroom Purpose of the changes: Solid math, reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills are foundational to life-long learning. The shift to integrated units as well as time for math problem solving, reading and writing process will provide additional support to the families as learning coach! • Encouraging on-site involvement (1 hour per month)

Agenda • K-5 - Student’s day at school (8:30 -1:00; enrichment – 1:05-2:05 and 2:10-3:10) Families and students welcome 15 minutes before class 8:15 AM. 6,7,8 th – Student day at school (8:30 – 2:05; enrichment 2:10 – 3:10) • • Learning Coach Responsibilities • Student Responsibilities • Progress • How progress is calculated • Quality and quantity • UNSATs

  7. Our doors open at 8:15 The school day begins at 8:30 Lunch is 12:00 – 12:30 Time for a light snack will be provided each morning. Please send your child with a snack item if you choose. Children bring their own lunch, or lunch items can be ordered. See the Tiger Tracks newsletter for more information.

  8. In-Class • Monday/Thursday – sessions of K/1, 2/3, 4/5 • Tuesday/Friday – another session of K/1, 2/3, 4/5 Tuesday – 8 th Grade • 8:15 – Welcome to Home Choice Thursday – 7 th Grade • 8:30 - Class begins Friday - 6 th Grade • Arrive after 8:35 – Tardy Slips issued * 15 minute morning recess 12:00 - Lunch 12:30 – Interventions in reading and math 1:00 – Class instruction ends (K-5) 1:05- 2:05 – First Enrichment 2:05 – Class instruction ends (6,7,8) 2:10 – 3:10 Second Enrichment 3:10 – School ends. Dismissal procedures begin.

  9. Classroom instruction ends at 1:00 pm or 2:05. Enrichment follows directly after; 1-3:05. ____________________________________________ Picking up your student can be a little confusing and frustrating. Be patient!

  10. Follow the arrows in the parking lot. As you enter, you will turn right and then form two lines. Four cars at a time can pull up in front of the building. We will bring your child to you. For everyone’s safety , please wait for your child to come to your car when it is your turn! Thank you!

  11. Learning Coach Responsibilities • In K- 12, Check under “daily plan” for the lessons to prepare and implement each day • Guide students through work as needed, check periodically that they are getting completed all they need to. Be sure to check the level of understanding also. • Creating a consistent communication plan with the classroom teacher is very important. Follow lessons and instructions given by Learning Coach  Work hard and complete each assignment with 80% or better.  Creating communication guidelines with both your learning coach and teacher  are very important to get set at the beginning of the year. • To intentionally plan engaging units of study, to create a community of learners, and to guide students to higher levels of learning. • Support learning coach and student online. • Monitor progress and communicate progress of both online and in-class work

  13. Unsatisfactory Progress • 1 UNSAT: Your teacher and learning coach will connect and check in to help navigate any road blocks that are getting in the way of making monthly progress. • 2 consecutive UNSATs: In person meeting with the Learning Coach, Student, Principal and Teacher to create an intervention plan. • 3 consecutive UNSATS: Student will be withdrawn; exceptions are rare. • 5 UNSATs throughout the school year - potential to be withdrawn and directed to enroll at neighborhood school. • 3 consecutive UNSATs will bridge over the summer.
