Why does it happen?

• The condenser coil, which is located in your outdoor unit,

transfers heat from inside your home to the outdoors. Condenser coils are made of copper.

• Fins provide additional surface area, which permit your

unit to better accept and reject heat and help direct air through the coil. Fins are made of aluminum.

• Copper and aluminum are dissimilar metals. In the

presence of an electrolyte like sea salt spray they deteriorate through a process called galvanic corrosion, the most aggressive of all corrosions.

How does it happen?

• Three elements are required for galvanic

corrosion to occur:

฀ Dissimilar metals (aluminum and copper) ฀ Metal-to-metal contact ฀ Metals in the same electrolyte solution (sea-salt spray)
