Council Priorities

Priority Vision A leading lifestyle.

Council wants Nelson to be recognised internationally as being an outstanding place to live. To do so our city will need a full portfolio of opportunities: arts, music, sports, active recreation, excellent facilities, a welcoming community. A place where simple pleasures are valued. Nelson will be a place where a good lifestyle doesn’t have to cost a lot of money.

A rich diverse community.

Council wants to build on the sense of community in Nelson. Connecting old and young, diverse interests, diverse backgrounds. Nelson can be a city whose residents find it easy to connect to each other and to the fabric of the city.

Community hubs.

These are physical spaces where people can gather and engage with each other and the city. Hubs connect people to their community. Council leads the way with urban design, providing hubs for neighbourhoods and the city, encouraging new ways of thinking about how our city works. Having places to come together, both casually and for events, builds pride in “our place” and a sense of belonging.

Easy access to an active lifestyle.

Council wants to strengthen links to our natural environment. We need to protect our special lifestyle which allows us to live in a city but be only minutes from beach and

  • bush. Gateways are important: access points to critical natural environments like the

waterfront, local hills, national parks.

What is our edge?

Council wants to champion and nurture areas where Nelson has a natural advantage. It might be our skills and knowledge giving the advantage or it might be our physical

  • environment. We need to use and strengthen these advantages to build expertise and
  • prosperity. Council will be an enabling leader across economic, environmental and

social domains – inviting others to act.
