Key Forms:

One way the intervention will fit into the landscape is by replicating some of the man made key forms surrounding the site such as strong horizontals and a stepped section from the quarry.

By reinstating the route of the funicular railway, there is a clear and defined route up to the barracks and the hotel. This will result in increased footfall and thus increased appreciation and exploration of the barracks by both locals and visitors.

By interfering with the barracks and making them a hostel, not only are you destroying their integrity and raw beauty, but you are eradicating any remaining evidence

  • f the conditions

and lives of the men living in the barracks. There is a beauty and excitement in exploring the decayed spaces in their current

  • state. It unleashes

imagination. 1900’s: Unhygienic, Damp, Musty, Dingy, Exposed, Crowded, Smokey... Intervention? Luxury, spacious, Conservation? Evocative, romantic, memories, Imagination, beauty in decay, peace...
