Quinta do Portal is a unique, family, fine winemaking company based in the Douro valley of Northern Portugal, the first wine region to be demarcated in 1756. Our family has been producing Ports for more than 100 years at “Quinta dos Muros” and has been in the region since the XV century having played a very important role in the Demarcation of the region. In 1974 we decided to start building our own stock of Port and also to expand the vineyard area at Quinta dos Muros followed by the acquisition of more land: Quinta da Abelheira (1979), Quinta do Confradeiro (1991) and Quinta do Portal (1991). In February 2008, we rented for 30 years Quinta das Manuelas, a neighbour property to Quinta dos Muros.

VINEYARDS

In the past 15 years we’ve been gone through a lot of experimentation and vineyard replanting. In this period we’ve totally replanted Quinta do Confradeiro and Quinta do Portal, replanted 90% of Quinta da Abelheira, 30% of Quinta dos Muros and 100% of Quinta das Manuelas. We’ve also changed a lot of the viticulture methods in order to obtain the best possible quality grapes to produce our Premium Ports, DOC Douro wines and Moscatel do Douro dessert wines.

ALL OUR VINEYARDS ARE LOCATED IN THE PINHÃO VALLEY, HOME TO THE BEST VINTAGE PORTS AND DOURO STILL WINES.

WINEMAKING

Until 1994 we were only producing Port Wine and all of it without exception was produced in our old granite “lagares” where the must was foot-trodden. In 1994 we used for the fjrst time the new winery at Quinta do Portal. With the knowledge, expertise and results we had in the past years the winery was completely renewed in 2007 with a sole objective: respect the work we’ve been doing in the vineyard; respect the grapes. In 2008 we fjnished building the new cellars at Quinta do Portal. A sophisticated and innovative project born in the vineyards, mixing with and transforming itself into landscape, through the metamorphosis of the materials used, like the schist and the cork, that follow the colours and the state of mind of each season of the year. The schist and the cork are the skin of a fascinating structure, where the Port and Douro wines of Quinta do Portal will be slowly aged, in a temple that honours the Wine and the Time.

WINES

Wine Enthusiast has classifjed our wines in 2005, 2007 and 2012 in their Top 100 Wines of the Year. At the 2009 Wine & Spirits 100 Best Wines of the Year we had the Best Portuguese Red and also the Best Buy from Portugal. Wine&Spirits awarded Quinta do Portal as a 2009 winery of the Year. In the past 6 editions of the International wine Challenge

9 Gold Medals, including the Champion Fortified Wine

wine of the World in its first release (The James Rogers Trophy). We won a Regional Trophy at Decanter World Wine Awards. We have around 100 ratings of 90+ points at Wine Spectactor, Wine Advocate, Wine Enthusiast and Wine & Spirits.

In 2007 Quinta do Portal was elected Winery of the Year by Revista de Vinhos, the most important Portuguese wines publication.

QUINTA DO PORTAL CREATES ELEGANT, EASY DRINKING WINES INTENDED TO BE APPRECIATED BY EVERYONE, FROM THE NON-PROFICIENT CONSUMER TO THE MOST ACCLAIMED WINE-WRITERS. QUINTA DO PORTAL IS BASED IN A YOUNG, ENTHUSIASTIC TEAM, WILLING TO GIVE A NEW IMAGE OF PORTUGUESE WINES. Wine&Tourism

As a complement to the wine production we have developed a wine&tourism project that includes a small guest house where guests are invited to feel and understanding the creation of our wines, from soil to their glasses.

rated Quinta do Portal as one of the Top Ten

International wine Destinations. In 2011 we won the Douro Architecture Prize with our new cellars.

Still in 201 1 we were the Global Winner of the Best of Wine Tourism awards in the Architecture and Landscapes category. In 2012 we were awarded Best Wine

Tourism in Portugal by Guia Boa Cama Boa Mesa, the best guide for hotels and restaurants in Portugal.
