What is the Vail Early College?
▰ An amazing opportunity for students to get a head start on college
▻ Program that is a mixture of college and high school courses ▻ Books, tuition, and Pima fees paid for by the Vail School District
▰ Supports provided by Vail staff!
▻ College Success class to support students ▻ Students will have more responsibility as they will be college students ▻ Parental involvement will not be the same as it is at the high schools

What will the Early College look like for students?

Student schedule based on 3 main concerns:
▻ Will it help them graduate from high school? ▻ Does the course align with their future degree path? ▻ Are the courses transferable to a four-year university?

▻ See VEC 2020-21SY Schoology course for individual student fall schedules. ▻ Schedules will change in the spring. ▻ Pima classes are only semester long.
Vail Graduation Requirements
Total Credits to Graduate = 22 English = 4 credits Math = 4 credits Science = 3 credits Social Studies = 3 credits Health = 0.5 credit Economics = 0.5 credit Fine Art and/or CTE* = 1 credit Senior Exit Project = 0.5 credit Other Electives to total 22 credits Pima courses = high school credit! ▰ WRT 101 & WRT 102 = English 4 ▰ MAT 151 = ½ credit math ▰ MAT 188 & MAT 189 = 1 year math ▰ PSY 101, SOC 101, etc. = elective credit
What will the Early College look like for students?
▰ VEC Bootcamp
▻ Virtual for fall ▻ Schoology will be used to deliver content and connect virtually ▻ Monday, Aug 10th - Tuesday, August 18th from 9am - 2pm
▻ Tentative Daily Schedule: ▻ 9am - 11am = Learning Together (synchronous activities) ▻ 11am - 1pm = Learning Independently (asynchronous activities) ▻ 1pm - 2pm = Learning Together (synchronous activities)
▻ No Bootcamp on Friday, August 14th!
What will the Early College look like for students?
▰ Remote Learning
▻ During Remote Learning, the VEC student day is still Monday through Thursday from 9:00am to 2:00pm.
▻ Students are expected to dedicate these hours to learning! ▻ Students will not schedule work or other non-school related activities. ▻ Students will check in and check out daily through the completion of a Google Form linked
▻ Students are expected to check in no later than 9:00 am and sign out no earlier than 2:00 pm, Monday through Thursday. Students who have Pima classes that start prior to 9:00 am are expected to sign in prior to the start of that class.
▻ Pima classes are virtual for the Fall semester, which means students will be attending class at a scheduled time through a virtual meeting room.
▻ Pima instructors will be taking attendance.
What will the Early College look like for students?
▰ On Campus Learning
▻ Will take place when Vail returns to On Campus Learning mode. ▻ Students will report to Mica Mountain HS campus Monday through Thursday from 9:00am to 2:00pm.
▻
Check in/Check out & learning expectations the same as Remote Learning. ▻ Our VEC “Hybrid” Mode will go into effect.
▻ Pima classes still virtual ▻ College Success, Government & VEC supports on campus
What will the Early College look like for students?
▰ Attendance
▻ Top factor in college success is attending class! Even if Virtual! ▻ Pima takes attendance
▻
Pima attendance & Daily check in/out will be part of College Success grade
▻ Absent is absent in college. ▻ Students will be encouraged to take responsibility for notifying VEC staff about absences.
▻
Doctor’s note will be required for appointments.
▻ VEC is contact point for attendance. ▻ Don’t call student high school of graduation regarding absences!
Attendance @ VEC should be considered the same as showing up for work!
What will the Early College look like for students?
▰ Courseload & Studying
▻ Students should expect to study and do work outside of class.
▻ 1 hour in class = 2 hours outside
▻ Students should expect courses to be difficult and require effort.
▻ No longer seeing teacher every day! ▻ Content is college level
▻ Grade of C or higher required for credit in a college course.
What will the Early College look like for students?
▰ Responsibility & Assistance
▻ College schedule = no scheduled lunch or “passing periods” ▻ Students will be expected to attend instructor office hours (even virtually)! ▻ Fear not….the College Success class will help students navigate the challenges they will face!
▻ Required tutoring ▻ Teach tools and show resources to be successful ▻ Monitor students on academic, social and emotional wellbeing.

▰ Connections!!!
▻ Students are still connected to their high school! ▻ Will graduate with their peers in May ▻ Can still participate in clubs, activities and school events ▻ Powerschool, Schoology & email ▻ School computer...if needed

▻ Textbooks for Pima classes will be purchased for VEC students. ▻ The only exception is if a textbook/item cannot be purchased through the Pima Bookstore. ▻ Students will get books around August 19th

Senior Exit Project @ the Vail Early College
▰ A year-long project completed throughout senior year. ▰ A Vail School District graduation requirement. ▰ Intended to help prepare students for life after high school and guide them towards selecting a future career.
1. Career Exploration 2. College Plan 3. College Level Writing 4. Portfolio 5. Presentation
At least a 70% must be earned on each component in order to pass the project and receive credit.
Component 1 = Career Exploration
▰ Traditionally completed through Job Shadowing/Mentoring
▻ Student selects a person working in a career field of interest to be their mentor ▻ Should be an occupation they are genuinely interested in pursuing ▻ Cannot be an immediate family member ▻ Required to be off-campus and outside of the school day
▻ Minimum of 25 hours
▰ Alternative options are being developed for students unable to complete face to face job shadowing due to COVID-19 concerns and restrictions.
Component 2 = College Plan
▰ College Plan Objective
▻ Help students prepare for a successful transition to university ▻ Make sure students know how their Pima credits will impact their future college plan
▰ College Plan Tasks
▻
Students will create a college plan that includes their current year at Pima and then their college/university years after.
▻
As part of the College Plan students will: ▻ Apply for a minimum of three college scholarships
▻
Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Parental involvement is needed for FAFSA completion!
Component 3 = College Level Writing
▰ The major paper assignment in Writing 101 (or WRT 102) will count as evidence of college level writing. ▰ Topic is based on the requirements of the Writing course and may not apply to their career field. ▰ This is the component that differs from the other Vail high school SEPs.
Components 4 & 5 = Portfolio & Presentation
▰ All work and documentation of the SEP organized in a physical portfolio. ▰ Portfolio presented to judges during SEP Presentation

Students present SEP and Vail Early College experiences to a panel of Vail & Pima staff and community members.

What does the Early College look like for parents?

3 Ways you can help your student be successful
▰ Make learning a priority
▻ Ensure your student attends daily and uses school time for getting needed supports. ▻ Encourage limited hours at a job. ▻ Schedule appointments for non-school hours. ▻ Ensure student has a workspace at home for conducive to learning.
