Philosophy/Strategy

  • Basic philosophy—

– Don’t generate tes0ng as busywork – But learn what you can early to allow you to change problems – Have a plan for what you will do if you find a problem with a test!

  • Strategy—

– Test more extensively early in the installa0on campaign (first few APAs) to look for required improvement to installa0on planning – Reduce (as appropriate) to checkout upon receipt and in final posi0on once installa0on strategy proven

Descrip0on of QC Tests:

  • A “Con0nuity check” is a check to the end of

the currently installed cable run to ensure the cable is s0ll connected to the module

– Needs to be understood in the context of ac0ve ganging

  • “Opera0onal test” is a check in a dark room or

light box to test the con0nued opera0on of the SiPMs (possibly with LED illumina0on?)

Tes0ng upon Unpacking

  • Ideally the APAs would be packaged in nearly-

light-0ght plas0c wrapping, which would allow us to do a final checkout prior to unpacking from the crate

  • Perhaps with an LED in the package?
  • All APAs would have an opera0onal test prior to

unpackaging throughout installa0on

  • Es0mated 0me: 15 to 30 minutes per APA pair
  • Remedia0on: TBD. Cable checks? Possible

replacement of damaged PD (depends on available space)

Tests upon Hanging Outside Cryostat

  • Immediately following assembly of upper APA to

lower APA, a con0nuity check will be performed for all 20 cables at the top of the APA stack

  • All assembled APA stacks would have a con0nuity

check throughout installa0on

  • Es0mated 0me: 10 to 15 minutes?
  • Remedia0on: Re-check cable connec0ons.

Possibly separate APA stack to access middle connectors if necessary?

Ini0al Tes0ng upon Posi0oning Inside Cryostat

  • Immediately following the APA arriving in posi0on

inside the cryostat, but prior to connec0ng the APA- Flange feedthrough cable, a con0nuity check will be performed

  • This checkout is envisioned early in the installa0on

process, and may be eliminated later.

  • The goal of this checkout is to catch cabling issues

caused by the rail installa0on system early enough to allow us to gain access for remedia0on

  • Es0mated 0me: 20 minutes (?) depending on ease of

access

  • Remedia0on: Move APA stack enough to allow access

to cables for repair. Possible other remedia0on as agreed to.

Full Cable Run Checkout

  • Following installa0on of APA-Flange

feedthrough cable, a con0nuity check will be performed

  • This check will occur for all PDs as early as

possible ader installa0on.

  • Es0mated 0me: 15 minutes
  • Remedia0on: Check cable connec0ons. Note

issues in database.

Post-installa0on Opera0onal Test

  • As soon as possible following installa0on and cable

checkout, it would be ideal if the cryostat lights could be turned off and an opera0onal (dark) check performed.

  • Ideally, this would happen on an stack-by-stack basis in the

ini0al installa0on phase, then perhaps on a weekly basis as

  • ur understanding evolves?
  • Es0mated 0me: 1 hour per stack (during off-installa0on-

shid 0me)

  • Test possible involves LED illumina0on?
  • Remedia0on: Note module status in logbook, try to

improve handling procedures to eliminate sources of failures.

Tooling

  • A con0nuity check tool will need to be developed to

allow for rapid tes0ng.

– Mul0-cable simultaneous connec0on? – No twist lock opera0on? – Automa0c test result evalua0on? – Automa0c data storage?

  • A portable opera0onal tes0ng sta0on should be

developed

– 4 channel readout? – Automa0c test result evalua0on? – Automa0c data storage?

  • Aim for opera0on by technicians, not scien0sts.

Data Storage/Evalua0on

  • Ideally, the data from all installa0on QC checks would

be downloaded to the database automa0cally, no later than at the end of the shid where they were taken.

  • Data flagged as outside opera0onal norms (TBD) would

be automa0cally flagged for expert interven0on

  • Weekly (?) expert examina0on of QC data from

recently installed modules

  • Performance trend lines maintained (automa0cally?)

to look for long-term changes to the system.

Summary:

  • While underground remedia0on is difficult,

QC tes0ng during installa0on is important to improve procedures and make possible repairs.

  • Tooling must be developed to allow tes0ng to

de made by non-PD experts

  • Data must be automa0cally stored, and easily

retrievable, to be most useful.
