  4. College or University? Th The dif ifferences: • Studying at University  Degree qualification – usually 4 years full time  Years 1-2 – breadth of study  Years 3-4 – specialisation in chosen subject • Studying at College:  A variety of qualifications – HNC, HND, BTEC …  Vocational Qualifications not available at Universities  Can be used as a stepping stone to Universities

General Information on UCAS • Number of choices – 5 • Cost- £23 • Simultaneous consideration • Medicine / Dentistry / Veterinary Medicine – 4 choices + 1 extra choice for another course (back-up) • 1 application per cycle • Deadlines – school deadline is 7 th October for early applicants and 25 th November 2016 for all other applicants.

Deadlines – Sheet Issued Da Date De Deadlin ine Set: t: Monday 5 th September First draft of Personal Statements for pupils applying to Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Studies, Oxford or Cambridge Higher Education Convention – Glasgow Science Centre Wednesday 14 th September First draft of Personal Statement for all other applicants Friday 7 th October All applications to Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Studies, Oxford or Cambridge submitted to UCAS Friday 25 th November All other applicants submitted to UCAS January 2017 College Applications will begin during January.

  9. Choosing Courses • This requires RESEARCH…LOTS OF IT!!! • Find out about courses you are interested in. This can be done through: * Online * UCAS course search * Prospectuses * Open Days / Conventions * Word of Mouth REMEMBER: Cou ourse entry ry requir irements sh show th the min inimum grades an an HEI wou ould ld expect an an ap appli licant to o have to even be consi sidered for an an of offer. If If an an of offer is is made, th they could ask ask for hig igher grades.

  10. The Process… There are 6 steps to applying and the Pastoral Care Team will work with pupils to assist them in the process of applying. Support and Advice • Higher Education Convention – SSE Hydro, Glasgow • Which Way Now Information Evening – September 2016 • S6 Assemblies / PSE Input • Visits from Colleges & Universities – June-November 2016 • One to one help and support from your Pastoral Care Teacher • Support / advice from the school’s Career Advisor and/or our Employability Officer • School Twitter page and School website It is the students responsibility to meet the deadlines and ensure that their application is submitted on time

Entrance Exams 2016/17 Medicine / Vet Medicine / Dentistry applicants: • UKCAT Test • Register online between 3 rd May 2016 to 21 st September. • Testing runs from 1 st July to 5 th October. • Practice is vital for this! • You MUST register online by yourself – schools do not enter you for this test. • Late entries are strictly forbidden!

  14. Entrance Exams 2016/17 Law – selected universities: • LNAT Test • 1 st September – 10 th January – Register and book test • Sit test by 15 th January • Students must register themselves for this • Practice lots!

Entrance Exams 2016/17 Oxbridge Applicants: • Some courses in some colleges require you to sit admission testing. • Some testing is carried out during your visit to the University, others are done in a test centre. • PLEASE do your own research – check each college you wish to apply and each course – they are all different. • Tests can include; BMAT, ELNAT, TSA, PAT, CAT (Oxford), MAT.
