  2. CO COP 25 Ma Madri drid. d. UN Secr cretary General’s op openin ing “Three major reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – on land, on the oceans and cryosphere, and on the 1.5 degree Celsius climate goal – each confirm that we are knowingly destroying the very support systems keeping us alive. And indeed, we are. In several regions of the world, coal power plants continue to be planned and built in large numbers. Either we stop this addiction to coal or all our efforts to tackle climate change will be doomed. And, as the UN Environment Programme has just revealed, countries are planning to produce fossil fuels over the next decade at over double the level that is consistent with keeping temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius”

  3. It It was the e en engi gineer eers of the e NE NE that ‘rel elea eased ed the e ge genie of coal into the world’

  13. Why here? North East England: o is the smallest English Region (affordability) o is targeting becoming England’s Greenest (ambition) o has a mix of dense urban/industrial, coastal and rural upland and lowland communities (spatial diversity) o has a Civil Society, deeply rooted in work with marginalised groups (reach) o has an acknowledged track record of regional co-operation (believable delivery) o is a ‘left behind’ region, vulnerable to the impacts of AI and Brexit (in line with priorities) o is the only English region with a positive balance of trade (economic contribution) o already contains nationally important innovatory projects across technology, engineering, environmental restitution and the address to the social and economic consequences of an unjust transition (policy integration) o is ten months into developing a multi-sector regionwide programme (self-help) o has a history that connects directly to current climate challenges (a compelling narrative)
