  1. The STEM Group in Action • Kirstin Himsworth Librarian County Durham and Darlington FT • Claire Masterman Librarian County Durham and Darlington FT • Joanne Naughton LKS Development Manager, North East

  2. The Roots of STEM How STEM came about What are the aims of STEM What are the benefits of STEM What are the risks of STEM What has happened so far? What are the next steps? How can you get involved?

  3. About STEM We know commissioners, public health and providers are all working on the same big issues We need to use our finite resources efficiently to avoid duplication and waste LKS Staff need to be involved in these conversations – just in the same way as finance managers, IT, workforce leads – system-wide decision-making

  4. What are the aims of STEM? We want to maximise the impact of the resources and skills to identify and apply knowledge to the planning and implementation of health and health care programmes. We want to support those (like us) who provide evidence from research to clinical, managerial and commissioning policy makers. We will therefore provide both virtual and real (in person) opportunities to connect and understand who is working on what, so that we can make more effective use of our collective knowledge and insights

  5. What are the benefits of STEM? • Networking/sharing ideas • A Movement not a Club • Seeing things from different perspectives • Local/regional/national involvement • Learning from the past, applying to the future • Active contribution to population’s health • Access to knowledgeable librarians and their services • Bottom-up movement

  6. Risks of STEM • Evidence cannot always be mobilised due to system structures • Vested interests • Not just librarians! Must be cross-professional! • Getting fixed on published evidence • How do we use tacit knowledge/pockets of knowledge • Complexity of developing bodies of evidence • How to align evidence with decision-making timescales – we need to share as we go • Juggling organisational priorities • Working across organisations – different points of view

  7. Where are we now? Still a small group but lots of interest in the North East and beyond. LKS Staff are very enthusiastic and this has helped to give us impetus. We have some good connections into the work of the STP We are already starting to receive questions from work stream leads

  8. STEM Case Study: supporting the development of a frailty framework • STEM Group request • North East STP Communities and Neighbourhoods Work Stream • Frailty framework for the North East • Aim – to develop a set of health outcomes • Literature search support

  9. Pros vs Cons • Cons: » Potential workload » Fear of the unknown • Pros: » Opportunity » Increase knowledge of regional / national picture » Working with others » LQAF » Beneficial to our Trust » Raising our profile

  10. Looking at the Evidence • Key document – ICHOM: Older person’s reference guide – research linked to Outcome Measures • Conference calls – preferable • 1 st – Preliminary discussion • 2 nd – To be invited to join working groups • Face-to-face meetings • Large volume of published research

  11. The story so far… • Early stages • In consultation process – more feedback required • Revised Framework to go to Commissioners and workstreams

  12. Next Steps We are planning our next first face to face meeting of the “Club” in June. We want to think about the Community of Practice element of the Club. Could this approach be extended and how can we work more closely across the North?
