What is Revalidation?

v Every three years, at the point of their renewal of registration, nurses and midwives will need to show that, as a professional, they are living by the Code’s standards of practice and behaviour v This process is called revalidation and it builds on the current ‘Prep’ requirements and is designed to be on an on-going basis rather than a point in time assessment v Nurses and midwives will need to meet a range of requirements, designed to show that they are keeping up to date and practise safely and effectively v Revalidation is about promoting good practice across the whole population of nurses and midwives and preventing isolation v Reinforcing the Code to be used as a reference point

What is the process to renew?

v As part of the application the registrant will be asked to declare they have met the revalidation requirements by answering questions v This renewal will be on-line v They will be asked to renew before the 1st day of the month before their registration expires at the end of that month v (e.g. by 1st of April if the date of expiry is the 30th) v The NMC provides guidance for this renewal process

8

slide-9
SLIDE 9

The renewal date

v This is the last day in the month that the registration expires v The registration will be renewed from this date onwards if the registrant has successfully completed the revalidation application before hand v In essence - the application must be a month in advance of the expiry of registration

Following submission of the application

v The NMC will select a sample of nurses and midwives to provide further information that they have met the requirements to verify the declaration made on the application v If the registrant is selected, the registration will not be renewed until this process is completed v Highlight to staff they must observe their emails after their revalidation application to make sure the NMC has not selected them for audit
