Our mission is to improve the quality of people’s lives by helping to build and improve communities that are beautiful, long-lasting and healthy.

From Cornwall to Caithness to Glenarm, we’re helping people to get to grips with sustainability. We’re currently involved in more than 30 developments, constructions, projects and causes in the UK. From designing children’s hospitals to building satellite towns, to teaching architecture and urban planning, we’re striving towards a sustainable, community based future for the country.

Central to this is sustaining local identity.

“Too much development in recent years has been mediocre, insensitive and has detracted from the character of the areas in which we live and work. The effect has been that much of the public have come to assume that any particular change to our built environment will be negative… (the reforms) will enshrine the local plan – produced by local people – as the keystone of the planning system.”

Enquiry by Design

A planning tool that brings together key stakeholders to collaborate on a vision for a new or revived community. This is developed through a workshop process which brings key stakeholders together, to assess a complex range of design requirements for the development site. Interactive rather than sequentially reactive as the conventional design planning process. Encourages innovative and dynamic solutions to key issues Is place-based and an intensive design enquiry; every issue is tested by being drawn.

BUILDING SKILL PROGRAMME

Our Building Skill programme offers something for everyone. Building Skill in Crafts – Traditional craft skills are a living connection to our cultural heritage. Our Building Skill in Students programme helps fill the global skills shortage in urban design and green architecture.

slide-33
SLIDE 33

Building Skill in Professionals brings architects, developers, builders and craftspeople together to learn from each other’s passion, wisdom and experience. We’re always ready to learn from other experts to help meet local needs: From the National Trust in the UK to trade unions and local development agencies in New Orleans.
