  3. Presentation Guidelines - Content  Think of a topic that will be interesting to your audience.  Check with your teacher that your topic is appropriate.  Think of some main points covering the most important aspects of your topic.

  4. Presentation Guidelines - Organisation (1)  An INTRODUCTION containing:  the topic of your whole presentation;  some background information to show why the topic is important;  a sentence describing the aim or purpose of your presentation;  an outline of the main points you will talk about;  a sentence telling the audience when they can ask questions;

  5. Presentation Guidelines - Organisation (2)  Some MAIN POINTS containing:  ordering words or phrases;  the main idea and the reason why this main idea is important;  details of each point;

  6. Presentation Guidelines - Organisation (3)  A CONCLUSION containing:  some words showing that you have finished your main points and are now moving on to the conclusion;  a reminder of the purpose of the presentation;  a short summary of the main points;  an invitation for the audience to ask questions;

  7. Presentation Guidelines - Interaction  Make eye-contact with your audience;  Use hand movements to help you to explain things;  Optionally, you can ask the audience simple questions;  The audience may ask you questions at the end of your presentation, so you will need to interact by answering them.

  8. Presentation Guidelines - Style and Tone  Don't use English which is too formal;  You can make funny comments, as long as they are funny, and not rude.  If there are any words in your presentation that you think your audience, including your teacher, will not understand, explain them.

  9. Presentation Guidelines - Language  Practise your presentation with someone who can correct your grammar.  If you don't know how to say something in English, find out!  Check that you can correctly pronounce all the important words in your presentation.

Presentation Guidelines - Fluency of speech  Use small cards with notes to remember what to say next;  Practise your presentation to improve your fluency;  If someone asks you a question and you need some time to think of an answer, use fill-in expressions;  If you can't understand a question, ask them to repeat or ask in more detail.

Planning your Presentation (classroom practice)  Form groups of 3 or 4  Plan and prepare a 5-minute presentation following the on-screen prompts and tips  Bear in mind the guidelines you’ve just been given  At the end of this practice, a member of your team will deliver the presentation to the rest of the class  Your teacher is here to guide and help you in the process  You will have the opportunity to assess your classmate’s performances and get feedback on yours

Summarise the topic in 5 words or less.  Why is this topic useful and interesting for your audience?  Optional interactivity: Write a question that you can ask the audience that will highlight their need to listen to your presentation.  What is the background (why did you choose this topic?)  What is your objective (what do you want the audience to know at the end of the presentation?)

These are, firstly,...  Secondly,....  Next/Finally I’m going to talk about....  Finally I’m going to look at...  Please feel free to ask me questions at any time. This presentation will last for about ..... minutes. Now think of alternatives....

  14. Planning your Presentation (2)  Main Points  Summarise the first main point in 5 words or less.  Summarise the second main point in 5 words or less.  Summarise the third main point in 5 words or less.  If you have a fourth main point, summarise the fourth point in 5 words or less.

Presentation script (Main points)  Firstly,  That’s the end of the first point.  Now I will move on to the second point, which is about....  That’s all for the second point.  Next,....  That's all for this point.  My fourth point is.....  That’s the end of the final point. Now think of alternatives....

  16. Planning your Presentation (3)  Conclusion  Write a sentence showing that you have finished.  Write a reminder of the purpose of the presentation.  Summarise the main points in a sentence.  Invite the audience to ask questions.

Presentation script (Conclusion)  In conclusion, in this presentation my objective was to....  I have covered .......main points, firstly,...  Secondly I talked about....  Next we discussed....  Finally we looked at....  I hope you have found this presentation useful. CONTENT  introduced him/herself  got my attention from the start  stated reasons for his/her choice of topic  gave overview of presentation  had a coherent pattern of organization  emphasised key points  gave sufficient detail to the main points  summarised key points before finishing  planned a conclusion DELIVERY  spoke loudly enough to be heard by everybody in the room  looked at entire audience  smiled and looked relaxed  did not read much from notes  used gestures to help convey meaning  pronounced words clearly  varied intonation and pitch for emphasis Q&A  prepared questions for the audience  answered questions with conviction  appeared open and confident during Q&A  prepared additional notes in anticipation of questions  addressed response to the entire audience, not just the person who asked the question
