Key facts

The EU Rapid Alert System for Food (RASF) was created in the EU in 1979. It is essentially a network to circulate rapidly, amongst food safety regulators, information about food-borne risks. Over the years, the RASF has proved its usefulness in disseminating key information and mitigating the impact

  • f food safety crisis.

In 2002, the RASF was:

enshrined in legislation (Regulation 178/2002) extended to the feed sector, and became: the RASFF.

To provide a rapid exchange of information among European countries and the European Commission about direct or indirect risks detected in relation to food

Exchanges of info with third countries

If the product originates from or is distributed to a third country, the third country is informed without undue delay. Notifications are sent to a single designated contact point in the third country for attention or for follow-up based on the seriousness of the risk. RASFF Window for third countries (presently: 90)

Information published within 24 hours Restricted access provided to a single contact point responsible for further coordination of information in its country Engaged towards observing confidentiality and providing feedback

RASFF portal database

Through the Portal anyone can search RASFF notifications based on a set of parameters. Information given on notification, product type, hazards found, measures taken, country of origin and distribution

  • f the product.

In a second phase it may link through to public recalls.

iRASFF

In June 2011 the first six countries were ready and trained to implement the new online RASFF application baptised ‘iRASFF’. In contrast with the RASFF, which is e-mail based, in the iRASFF, member countries enter the notification directly

  • nline in iRASFF.

More specifically regarding follow-up, the system provides very new possibilities.
