Recap - Creating hyphenated words Do you remember learning about creating hyphenated words during our work on 'The London Eye Mystery?' Ted was wearing a light, blue jacket. What does the word 'light' refer to in this sentence? The weight of the jacket. We can replace the comma with a hyphen: Ted was wearing a light-blue jacket. What does the word 'light' refer to in this sentence now? The colour of the blue is light. Would we say that Ted was wearing No, because we can tell that it doesn't make a blue-light jacket? Why? sense. So, we cannot simply place a hyphen between any two words to make a hyphenated word; we must ensure that when we join two separate words with a hyphen, we are making one new word (an adjective) which describes the noun in the sentence.

Describe The Lost Thing using as many hyphenated words as you can. Remember, a hyphenated word is where two words have been joined with a hyphen to make an adjective that describes a noun.

rusty-orange shell

(Rusty describes the colour orange and together, the hyphenated words describe the noun).

Your challenge is to write a short character description focusing on how The Lost Thing works, what the different parts of him do and how useful he could be. This is different from character descriptions we have written in the past (e.g. based on Coraline) because it does not focus on how he looks. Teacher Shared Emerging from the base of his rusty-orange shell are six muscular tentacles that serve as

  • legs. As he has six legs, The Lost Thing can run much more quickly than me (with only two

legs) so he would be brilliant at running errands - he'd have them done in no time!
