Audition Process
Adults
- All must book an individual vocal slot.
- All must attend the movement call
- Please read audition pack carefully and prepare the pieces
set , where stated
- Be prepared!
- Adult cast must be 16yrs +
Children
- Auditions will be in groups. Book into one of the groups.
Each session will be up to 30 mins long.
- Both vocals and movement will be tested in these sessions
- Please prepare the pieces set
- Ensure you are under the height restrictions – we will
measure you on the day

Valjean
Audition Material
- A short own choice selection in the musical style of your
chosen character (not from Les Misérables).
- “Bring Him Home” Bar 95 to the end (“Bring him peace,
Bring him Joy…”)
- AND “Who Am I?” Bar 112 to the End (“Who am I? Can I
condemn this man to slavery, ……” to End) Recall, if requested: the two complete Les Misérables songs listed above.
- A strong story teller
- Deliver an emotional performance
- Appears physical strong
- Begins show aged early 40’s and ages to 60’s
- High lyric baritone or tenor with strong low
notes, A to B
Javert
- Has strong stage presence
- Can show passion for his beliefs
- Begins the show aged early 40’s and ages to
60’s
- Baritone with a vocal tone darker than that

His role is often played as the evil character whereas he in reality he is not, he is just passionate about his beliefs and focussed on getting results

- A strong story teller

noble character, who’s life becomes a series of terrible events
- Stage age – early to mid 20’s
- Mezzo belt, G♭ to E♭
- This actor will wear 2 wigs – so will need
to be able to get her hair under these.
- May be added to some chorus numbers for
remainder of show

- Has had a sheltered privileged upbringing
until aged 17 but for the last 5 years has supported himself
- Tenor – middle C to high A♭
- This is the romantic role – is required to kiss
Cossette
- Stage age – early 20’s
- Waltzes in the wedding scene

Cossette
- Confident classical soprano – B♭ High C
- Is a strong romantic heroine – is required to
kiss Marius
- After being adopted by Valjean has lead a
comfortable but secluded life
- Stage age 18

Thenardier
- He is embodiment of evil
- Blinded by greed, Thénardier is incapable of
loving other human beings and spends every minute in the pursuit of money
- That said, he should also possess a wicked
sense of humour and have great comic timing

- Stage Age 30s-40s, ages to 50s-60s
- Some dance background an advantage

Madame Thenardier
- She is coarse, vulgar, greedy and larger
than life
- Mme. Thénardier is just as evil as her
husband and takes special pleasure in abusing Cosette
- Comic and quick to see an opportunity,
but like her husband is a villain through and through.
- Strong Actress with comic timing.
- Alto Belt, G# to D with lots of character

The Bishop
- Stage Age: 45-60s
- Bass
- A much-admired clergyman who shows
great kindness and charity to Valjean and initiates the ex-convict’s path to spiritual renewal

Children’s Roles
We are looking to cast 2 – 3 male and 2 – 3 female children. The girls may alternate roles . Female height – under 125cm / male under 135cm Young Cosette – stage age 7

Students
All students have a stage age of early to mid 20’s and a vocal range of Low A to F. Also play other ensemble roles.
- Combeferre - a philosopher and believer in peace. He is gentle,
humane, strong and brave.
- Feuilly - a worker, self-educated and an orphan. A Believer in
“nationality”. Affectionate, warm, poetic.
- Courfeyrac - a student, He is youthful, passionate and fearless.
Students
- Joly - a medical student. Eccentric and light-hearted, although
- ccasionally morbid. His name is from the English “jolly”
- Prouvaire - a student of social studies. He is kind, soft spoken and at
the right moments strong and masterful. He is a poet
- Lesgles - a student, cheerful, laughing at life but unlucky. Close
friends with Joly
- Grantaire - a student, the opposite of Enjolras. He believes in
- nothing. He admires Enjolras, but loves to mock him. Witty and
- ften drunk, he is happy being with the group and they put up with
him because of his good humour
Thenardiers Gang
These are generally older than the students. Vocal ranges C sharp (below middle C) to E. Also play other ensemble roles.
- Brujon - Physically strong. The body of a bear and a pea sized
- brain. A gangster, stupid and evil
- Babet - Physically frail, but lean and cunning
- Claquesous - “He is the night.” tough, dangerous & secretive
- Montparnasse - A teenager, handsome and dangerous. Kills
with a knife. He is well dressed, strongly built and possessive

Ensemble women
A variety of female ensemble roles are available with most playing multiple roles – these include
- Factory workers
- Beggars
- Whores
- Inn patrons
- Wedding guests
- There are a number of featured solo roles
- Harmony work important
- Dance background an advantage

- Most cast will need to be confident
movers, with good timing
- Some specialist dancers required
- Partner work in the wedding scene
- All dancers need to do a vocal audition
- Females please bring heels to dance call
- Those females wanting to be considered
for the whores scene must be comfortable oozing over male cast
- Please wear clothing and footwear you
can move in
Rehearsal process
- Chorus will generally be required Sundays. Some may
be required on the occasional week night.
- Leads will be 1 to 2 nights a week plus Sundays
- Commitment to rehearsals is important. If you must
miss a rehearsal it is your responsibility to catch up.
- We are in Baycourt for 4 weeks – you must be able to
commit to this period.

- 27 April – movement call for all
- 5 May – cast announced by now
- 24 May – 1st rehearsals
- 29 Aug – Pack into Baycourt
- 11 Sept – Opening Night

Yes we will have a live orchestra! We are currently looking for a reed player to join an exciting collection of talented musicians already with the project. We would love to take names of any other instrumentalists in the event of any openings and for future opportunities with the society
