  • What is the SSM Symposium Award?
  • SSM Symposium Award is a speech and presentation competition,

where the participants are required to present their findings / research on a provided topic. The presentation will be evaluated by judges to determine the best presenter

  • Who can participate?
  • Any Sikh youth, who has atleast attended 3 years of Panjabi /

Gurmat School at The Sikh Society of Michigan, who is in 11th grade or higher upto University Senior.

  • Any student who has won the scholarship contest in the past is not

eligible.

  • What is the Award?
  • 1st place - $1000
  • 2nd place - $500 (minimum 6 participants required for 2nd place

award)

  • What are the dates?
  • All interested participants must register by June 29th, 2014
  • Speech and Presentation competition will be on August 16th, 2014

at The Sikh Society of Michigan

  • Registered participants must submit their material to the judges via

email by August 15th, 2014

2 PRESENTATION: Presentation will be based on your research of the assigned topic. You will be required to present your research with following format:

  • 1. Presentation should be prepared using MS Powerpoint
  • 2. Expected presentation time is 8-10 minutes
  • 3. Presentation material can be in English or Panjabi
  • 4. Speech can be in English or Panjabi
  • 5. Score will be based on following:
  • a. Style & Delivery
  • b. Voice & Eye Contact
  • c. Language
  • d. Effectiveness
  • e. Presentation Material Flow
  • f. Material Content (see Material Content section for more details)
  • g. Inclusion of Quotes / References during explanation
  • h. Ability to respond to Judges/Peers questions

Material Content: For the provided topic, you should present the following content:

  • 1. Full Shabad
  • 2. Title and author of Shabad, where it can be found
  • 3. Meaning of each sentence (References required)
  • 4. History / Historical reference of when/how this shabad was recited (References

required)

  • 5. How does this Shabad impact or apply to your life
  • 6. Works Cited / Bibliography

Scoring: Total score for the presentation will be 200 Points

  • 1. Presentation Style (80 points)
  • a. Style & Delivery
  • b. Voice, Diction & Eye Contact
  • c. Language Command
  • d. Effectiveness
  • e. Overall flow of presentation
  • 2. Material Content (120 points)
  • a. Answer to every question
  • b. Accuracy of each answer
  • c. Use of personal opinion
  • d. Support of opinion/actions using Gurbani
  • 3. Detail scoring method will be available for the participants after they register

  • 1. What was the impact of 9/11 to Sikhs living in America?
  • 2. What was the impact of June 1984 and November 1984 to Sikhs living in India?
  • 3. What are the similarities / differences between the two events?
  • 4. How was the reaction of non-Sikhs similar / different between the two events?
  • 5. What was the Sikh reaction towards the atrocities they faced in each case?
  • 6. Can the Sikh reaction be justified using Gurbani?
  • 7. Is it similar to other events in Sikh history?
  • 8. What can Sikhs learn from each of these events?

Important Dates

  • Registration open for Symposium – June 8th, 2014
  • Submit Presentation Material to Judges via email – August 15th, 2014
  • Symposium / Competition – August 16th, 2014 (time will be announced at a later

date)

  • Awards – August 17th, 2014 during Sunday Diwan
