Infrastructure Security - Challenges

5

  • All cyber systems are identified and access is physically secured;
  • Personnel with business/operational needs to access cyber systems, including employees and contractors, are

identified and documented;

  • Owners/operators grant and revoke access based on changing business/operational needs; and
  • Access to cyber systems is monitored and documented.

NERC Requirements

  • Physical key management is difficult and in-effective;
  • Granular access control is near impossible with physical keys;
  • Lack of audit trail for compliance purposes with physical keys;
  • Lack of accountability and visibility from a security and safety

perspective with physical keys; and

  • Traditional HID electronic badge systems are too costly to implement

at many distributed assets.

Challenges with Current Solutions

Infrastructure Security - Benefits

7

The Youtech Smart Lock system provides granular control of physical access to critical facilities. Owners and

  • perators of distributed electric system facilities, including solar, wind, and energy storage facilities, can greatly

enhance security by increasing control and visibility of their physical assets.

Secure and easy to use

1

Youtech Smart Locks require no batteries and are designed to operate for a lifetime in the harshest conditions providing excellent operational reliability and eliminate the need for expensive hard-wire power.

No battery or other constant power sources needed

2

A single Youtech smart key can manage thousands of smart locks, greatly simplifying lock and key management.

One electronic key to replace many

3

Operating permissions are issued or revoked dynamically eliminating the need to replace or rekey locks when personnel and contractors change or when a key goes missing. Operating permissions can be managed on individual, group, department or site basis.

Easy and secure access control management

Record of all personnel, business role, permissions, permission history, and time stamped history of device

  • peration is constantly maintained. All locking/unlocking operations are recorded with a time stamp providing a

robust audit trail.

Automated recordkeeping/audit trail

5

Youtech Smart Locks communicate directly with any smart phone via Bluetooth, and the Youtech Secure mobile application communicates directly with the servers for real-time monitoring and control in the field.

Customers may choose to deploy the access control software on its own information system or take advantage

  • f growing popular cloud computing offerings such as Amazon’s AWS or Microsoft’s Azure.

Secure and flexible information technology platform

7

The innovative design of our passively powered digital locks, as well as the advantage of cloud computing, allows us to offer this state-of-the-art physical security management system at competitive prices as compared with similar systems that requires batteries or traditional hard-wired HID-badge systems.

Switching Safety - Challenges

10

Even with the best practices of safety culture, training and procedures, people can still make mistakes because we are not perfect. Other challenges includes changing workforces and operational complexity.

To error is human

In 2011, a switching error caused a widespread blackout in Southwest US and Northern Mexico. Billions of dollars were lost as result. NERC issued ~$38 million fines.

The switching person was experienced and well prepared but was distracted at the time of switching.

He missed a critical step to bypass the series capacitor before opening the isolation switches. He THOUGHT he completed a critical step already and marked it complete.

This error can be easily prevented by Smart Interlocking technology.

Switching Safety – Solution

Smart Interlocking System Smart key RFID embedded locks

Switching sequence or switching order is stored in and displayed on the smart key which guides switch

  • perators step-by-step to safely perform switching.

Switching mechanisms are physically locked by an RFID embedded lock that can ONLY be unlocked by the Smart Key at the correct step of the switching sequence, preventing mis-operations and ensuring worker safety. Smart Interlocking System (SIS) models switching rules, switchgear functions/capability and network topology to determine if a switching step is safe or not and uses a smart key to carry out the switching steps.

12

Switching Safety - Benefits

12

Successfully deployed at over 30,000 locations, human errors are nearly eliminated with the help of SIS, significantly improving safety and reliability.

Enhanced safety

1

All switching sequence steps are simulated and verified to be safe before transferring to the smart key, providing an opportunity to practice switching sequences before executing.

Simulation

2

SIS is designed to match closely the existing switching processes and practices. Smart technology can now automate mundane and error prone activities such as manually develop a new switching order or modify an existing one, verified for safety before switching.

Automated switching order development

3

All locking/unlocking actions are recorded with date and time stamp providing a robust audit trail and for post switching reporting and analysis.

Automated recordkeeping
