National Residue Survey

The National Residue Survey (NRS) is vital for managing the risk of chemical residues and environmental contaminants in Australian animal and plant products. Monitoring can: identify potential problems, including inappropriate use of chemicals indicate where follow‐up action by state or territory regulators is required. The program is funded by a statutory 0.015 per cent ‘farm‐gate‐value’ levy on producers of participating grains.

Grains program

  • The grains program covers 21 grain commodities:
  • Samples are collected at:.
  • Export terminals and container packing facilities; and
  • On delivery to domestic users.
  • Grain samples are freighted overnight directly to the contract analytical

laboratory. All grain samples are subjected to a multi‐residue chemical screen covering a range of pesticides and environmental contaminants. A percentage of samples are also randomly subjected to additional herbicide, phosphine and heavy metal screening.
