CONVERSATION BRIEF

A Conversation: Take time to develop ideas and experiment with difgerent media, materials and technologies. Play with instructions, take turns, participate and interact. — studiomoniker.com What’s the most important conversa- tion for today? What’s the most important conversa- tion for the future? Who will you speak to? Tirough the application of your chosen practice you are asked to research a develop a visual outcome that centres around the idea of ‘A Conversation’ . Basic examples or starting points you may want to explore could include: — Visualising a conversation between two people. Tiis could be spoken or possibly a more creative conversation acted out through workshop activity or creative play. — A conversation between yourself and technology (Sofuware) iPhone Apps. — An external, political or social conversation that you may support or contest. — Interrogating the movement of a physical activity. A football match. A walk in the park. A bike ride. We also want you to consider the capture of “ A Conversation” and apply the most appropriate medium. Print Poster, Fanzine, Book, Fashion, Ephemera, Manifesto, Magazine, Direct Mail, Campaign Posters, Advertisement, Script, Photograph. Screen Web, App, Film, Animation, Info graphics, Motion Graphics, Gener- ative Design, Game, 30-second TV spot, Social Media, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Flash Mob, Behance, Blogcentres around the idea

Social Networking My fjrst initial idea was Linkedin, as it is a professional use, virtual employment, post in discussions, technical expertise and many more. Facebook is one of the communication methods, where most people use it. Virus By talking with many people at University, I got the second idea, i.e. virus Ebola, which is a today conversation. Scotland Issue Tiird idea is Scotland issue, whether Scotland wanted to be a part of England or not. Tiis issue had been stretched in the medias, which I thought about to make a conversation out of it.

initial brainstorming

Chosen topic VIRUS EBOLA

Tirough my research I have found a scientist’s newspaper: “Laboratory News, Tie Scientists’ Newspaper”/ September 2014 / http://www.lab- news.co.uk. Can we Stop Ebola?” Tiis newspaper have a lot of good information about virus Ebola. As a start I needed this as I am making a conversation about Ebola virus interaction with human body. “As the body count continues to rise – do we have any defence against Ebola Virus?” Tiis questions to readers whether we can stop it. In this case this can be formed another conversation whether we can stop it or not? It gives an example of a man called Mabalo Lokela in West Africa, in the end of August, 1976, had been taken

  • ill. Where he started to vomit

uncontrollably, developed acute diarrhoea, headaches and had diffjcult to breathe. His nose, eyes and gums began bleeding. On september in 1976 he was dead. Tiis was where Ebola virus fjrst was introduced. Moreover, Dr Seth Berkley of the GAVI alliance, an organisation promoting vaccination in developing nations, mentions about that Ebola is a horrible disease but then there are many other bad ones that kill far

  • more. I will able to use this

information for my upcoming research.

Microscopic images of animal and human cells

Tirough my research, I went to Science Building to get some samples from the

  • lab. Tianks to Professor Ibrahim, who permitted me to use the microscope for

both samples of animal cells and human blood cells.

clay modelling

I was inspired by Shaun the Sheep clay modelling. At this point, I created Ebola and hammer with plasticine as it was easy to use and it gets never dried for my stop-motion animation. Moreover I tried to model a man but unfortunately it didn’t turned out well, so I decided to use wood fjgure manikins as a start then wrapped with plastic so I can put the clay mod- el of it. I was trying to make Shaun the Sheep model technique but at this stage I didn’t complete it as it was quite complex.

slide-9
SLIDE 9

COMIC BOOKS FOR INSPIRATION

A feedback from Darren Raven was to use a real human, it was a challenge for me as it is not easy to make a stop-motion with using two difgerent objects, i.e. clay model Ebola and the real human. I thought of using a real man model. By seeing one of my colleague’s comic books, which inspired me of making a conversation between the Ebola and the human by using speech bubbles. Tiis idea will approach me for sending the message to people about the awareness of Ebola so that they can prevent themselves before the virus Ebola enters into their body.

DEVELOPMENT

I have created cut-outs of the real image of an Ebola and added a string as I wanted to make Ebola move easily while doing stop-mo- tion animation. Here I created cut-outs of my clay model Ebola. Tiis looks more inter- esting and also a bit grotty look. I have used this for my stop-motion an-

  • imation. But I have added no strings at the back due to I felt it was quite

diffjcult to manage to take still images and move around.

slide-12
SLIDE 12

Tiis avatar model is taken from freepik.com .

I have made cut-outs and changed slightly from the original avatar

  • model. To make it a bit difgerent and have my own character. I did use

the same clothes style and colour as it looked quite nice. I just changed a bit of her hair but used the same colour as it looks nice and fjts with her shoes.

slide-13

facial expression

Each facial expression is set up in order for my stop-motion animation, as in frames by frames you can see at the fjrst she is thinking and when she fjnds out something. To the next when she says thank you afuer when ebola says she is looking cute. When Ebola introduces himself then she is confused at fjrst then later she thinks about whether ebola is the virus where everyone is talking

  • about. Ebola says yes he kills people and she is shocked by it. She is

scared and starts to cry before ebola kills her with his axe. Tiis image is taken from Pixeden. My interest is more focused on the facial expression and I slighly changed the colour of the eyes and lips, and added some blush on cheeks.

I am very satisfjed and happy with the outcome for my animation piece. Tiis has been quite while extended as I have used my time to make things like cut-outs I would at least say it’s been ages for me to do cut-

  • uts stop-motion animation. Tie more I understand the concept and

theory about the frames, the easier it was for me to do this kind of work. I am very satisfjed with my work.

Huddersfjeld Vernacular Brief: ‘Tie term vernacular design refers to artistic and technical expression broadly characteristic of a locale

  • r historical period; it closely relates to retro design.

Vernacular design is the paraphrasing of earlier commonplace graphic forms, such as baseball cards, matchbook covers, and unskilled commercial illustrations and printing from past decades.’ (Qoutation taken from Meggs’ History of Graphic Design by Philip B. Meggs/Alston W. Purvis) Tiis project will allow me to work with my peers, in

  • rder to explore the nature of vernacular,

collaboratively assemble, share and analyse research and then individually work up with concepts and outcomes. Tiis project has 2 tasks:

  • 1. Group task: to collaborate and share research

together.

  • 2. Individual task : to develop and produce my own

individual outcomes.

  • 1. Group Tasks:
  • A group of 4-5 people from animation and

motion graphics course

  • Spending time together in the Huddersfjeld Town for
  • bserving and documenting of what we see, hear and

experience.

  • Capturing as much of vernacular elements, objects,

activities, sights, sounds, etc. By these factors they make Huddersfjeld what it is.

  • Building a shared group resource of our collected

research.

  • Developing a number of shared concepts and ideas

that each member of the group can individually explore, experiment with and develop into an individual outcome.

  • 2. Individual Tasks:

Developing ideas and producing of a variety of concepts for a maximum 30 sec of animation or piece of graphic image that uses the theme of Huddersfjeld vernacular from the group research.

SLIDE 20

We together collected some ideas of what we each individually want to research about by making a mind-map:

slide-21
SLIDE 21
slide-22
SLIDE 22

I have created a storyboard of how my animation piece will look like:

slide-23
SLIDE 23

In this animation fjlm, you will see the alphabets are moving forward to indicate of people walking and same time the background texture is moving faster, as it shows many difgerent places of Huddersfjeld. My aim is to show designers of how we can perceive objects by looking at it and how we can create them into shapes or forms for typography and also whether they can reckon these patterns in Huddersfjeld.

slide-24
SLIDE 24

I have decided to go for my second idea, i.e. my fjrst impression to Huddersfjeld and made simple illustrations that makes me feel and look out

  • f things. Basically I wanted to create 5 senses along with my animation piece for 30 second. I was thinking more less using symbols and usings

sounds to illustrate the efgect of it.

slide-25
SLIDE 25

Clouds

Symbolise the part of the nature - here I wanted to give the efgect of wind is blazing and it is kind of way to tell a story. Tie animation piece begins with clouds as you see them from frog perspective and I used a help from all-free-download.com for the shape of clouds where I have added the colour and gradient efgect in Adobe Illustrator.

slide-26
SLIDE 26

Birds

Symbolise the part of the nature and also freedom. I have made an origami style birds. Added gradient to birds for defjnition and maintained the theme/style and illustrations throughout the animation fjlm.

slide-27
SLIDE 27

Leaves

Symbolise the part of nature. In the fjnal animation piece, I animate leaves to fall. Added a gradient efgect to the leaves, in order to create the illusion for real leaves. Tie branch was taken from all-free- download.com.

slide-28
SLIDE 28

Ocean

Symbolise the part of natue. Oceans can be very loud and sometimes calm, however I made it more loud sound as It was cloudy day I visited Huddersfjeld for the fjrst time in December

  • 2013. It was quite windy too and even the lakes/rivers also roaring. It was quite cold too. I

designed this 2D ocean to create the illusion of streaming.

slide-29
SLIDE 29

Font

Tie font I have used is Helvetica Regular and clip mask the patterns of the images that I have earlier posted on this pdf fjle to indicate the footsteps of each places I have been to. I thought this would be quite efgective and simple to do. In the end of the animation piece it reveals HUDDERSFIELD as text as all those others was to illustate the style and nature

  • f my theme. I have maintained the text throughout the animation to make a theme about

Huddersfjeld and I did text-making in Afuer Efgects.

SLIDE 31

Overall, I think this project has been very attention grabbing and enjoyable for me. You get to explore new areas of Huddersfjeld in depth and detailed wise. You get to show your common interest and share your research with your peers. I am quite satisfjed of what I have produced until now afuer learning some cool techniques during lectures at studio workshop with Sara, Jason, Darren and Tracy. It was quite challengeable to develop some ideas and experiment with them.

  • Promotes awareness that Design

Works Wonders in business

  • Looks striking and visually engaging
  • Gets their customers excited about

MOO

  • Makes people smile
  • Encourages people to visit moo.com

“Visually celebrate MOO’s belief that ‘Design Works Wonders’ ” YCN Student Awards Brief

slide-36

The MOO brand is… Playful They like to be playful by telling funny stories, plan cheeky surprises and to make people smile. Open When things go wrong, they like to be

  • pen, as well when they are right. It’s all

part of being trusted and relied upon. Encouraging is a big part of the MOO spirit. Social MOO is a sociable brand, they are chatty and hard-working to keep their customers feeling ease and informed. Helpful Being helpful is something Moo is great at understanding their customers and making sure they have got what they need.

slide-37

Why Moo Brief ?

I have chosen the MOO brief because it inspired me. Just by reading it through, I had so many ideas on how to approach

  • it. I also really liked about MOO, which is an online print and

design company, which highly interested me, as I want to be a part of their team.

Design :

I have looked closely and analyzed MOO’s pattern designs, in order to understand what they want or expect, and then decided to experiment with

  • them. I used their pattern designs as

for an inspiration, in order to create my

  • wn pattern designs from scratch, what

created similar, but applied with different effect, what at the end is consistent to their style.

The Final Piece :

slide-53
SLIDE 53

I found out by looking at YCN live briefs interesting and challenging as all the companies from YCN live brief, for instance, GAP, Yorkshire Tea, MOO, Whistle, etc. want us as designers to represent their brand with our creative

  • approach. How we can create an idea

into reality. I explored different briefs and noted some ideas down like a brainstorm and also some of mood boards to see whether I can produce some ideas from it. I must say they were very challenging ones and it wasn’t easy for me to pick one of the

  • briefs. Moreover I believe one of the

live briefs will suit my skills and also to my interest to develop the creative approach for the brand. Therefore I picked MOO brief as it inspired me. Just by reading it through, I had so many ideas on how to approach it. I also really liked about MOO, which is an

  • nline print and design company, which

highly interested me, as I want to be a part of their team. I have looked closely and analysed their patterns to understand what they want or expect, and then decided to experiment with

  • them. I used their patterns as for

inspiration in order to create my own pattern designs from scratch, what created similar, but applied with different effect, what at the end is consistent to their style. I believe in making single patterns as they look minimalistic and elegant. Simple is always the best.

Overall this project has been a good start but my ideas are initials and due to short time these mini briefs were given by professional people from companies: Fantastic Media, Mighty Giant and The Level Collective. I wanted to make simple but same time

  • elegant. Birds are positive and it means freedom. Waves also means

freedom as they are quite open space and spread out. . My theme for this is freedom and using the natural colours such as, blue, pink and light green. I enjoyed this brief but I couldn’t complete it due to time pressure.
