Storage of Pesticides: Central Storage

  • 1. The Correct Location of a Store

When planning the location of a store, the following must be considered:

  • Environment
  • Site access
  • Customers
slide-4
SLIDE 4

MAURITIUS

Environment: Store must be located far away from:

  • Domestic areas with houses, schools, shops, hospitals, etc.
  • Eating areas and food factories.
  • Areas prone to flooding.
  • Water Bodies: Rivers, lakes, reservoirs; also wells, boreholes

and open water sources.

Site access: Suitable access for customers, delivery vehicles, and emergency vehicles. Space between the store and surrounding buildings to allow vehicles to move in and out. Customers - Very important. The store must be:

  • Easy to find.
  • Easy to reach
  • Easy to enter.

Store must be constructed properly. The following points are important:

  • 1. Separate rooms.
  • 2. Building materials.
  • 3. Ventilation and heat control.
  • 4. Light.
  • 5. Emergency exits.
  • 6. Security.

  • Chemical storeroom:
  • Equipment room:
  • Changing room:
  • Shower and basin:
  • Soak away/sump: To collect waste washings.

2.2 Building materials Major threats: fire hazard and chemical spills.

  • Reinforced concrete walls.
  • Floors must not allow liquids to go through. The surface of the floor

must be smooth for easy cleaning of spilled chemicals.

  • Solid roof area that is watertight, strong, and durable.

Storage of Pesticides:

  • 2. The Proper Construction of a Store
slide-9

2.3. Ventilation and heat control Well ventilated!! Equipped with air ventilation openings in the walls. Roof air vent be installed to allow for fumes to escape from the building. High Windows: windows should be placed very high to let in light but also to prevent direct sunlight from falling on the stored products; high windows will also keep the store cool.

  • 2. 7. Security
  • Entrance doors must be of solid wood or steel and must open

  • 7. Security
  • All doors must be lockable.
  • Site should be fenced off with a proper gate.
  • Adequate warning signs posted at each section.

E.g. Danger; No unauthorized entry; Wear protective clothing; No eating or drinking; Fire hazard; No smoking.

  • The wall vents should be covered with sound wire netting.

Products should be stored in a proper place to avoid accidents, loss

  • f products, and damage of products.

Stores need to be organized according to the three S’s:

  • 1. Segregation
  • 2. Separation

Even if you are very careful with the agri-inputs, an accidental spill may occur on the store floor. The following materials are needed to clean a leakage or spill:

  • Protective clothing.
  • Absorbent material, such as sand or sawdust mixed with lime (the

lime neutralizes the product).

  • Special bag or container for agri-input waste.
  • Pan or flat spade.
  • Bucket.
  • Mop.
  • Dustpan and brush.

  • 2. Protect yourself.
  • 3. Upright the container, if possible, to avoid further spillage.
  • 4. Surround the spill to avoid further contamination (in the case of

a liquid).

  • 5. Soak the spill with sand or sawdust (in the case of a liquid).
  • 6. Brush it up carefully and dispose in the special bag or container.

Disposal of Pesticides:

  • 1. Why Empty packages Should not be Reused

Pesticides are packed in different packages:

  • Containers made of metal or plastic
  • Carton boxes
  • Bags made of strong paper

Sometimes the packages are reused to carry water, food items, or any

  • ther item.

It is extremely DANGEROUS to reuse any empty package. There are always residues left in the package, not visible

Bags

  • Cleaning
  • Protect yourself. Put on gloves, boots, and overall. Wear a mask

if powders were inside the bag.

  • Empty the bag in a waste bag made for agri-inputs.
  • Destruction
  • Cut the bag to make it unusable.
  • Fold the bag to make it as small as possible.
  • After cleaning and destruction
  • Put the waste bag aside to be ready to be disposed.
  • Clean your protective clothing.

  • 1. Burning -Not Recommended.

On-farm incinerator do not rise high enough to burn all materials. Smoke released during the burning process is very toxic and dangerous for human health.

There are 4 ways to dispose of empty packages:

Protective Equipment:

  • 1. Why Wear Personal Protective Equipment?

Pesticides can enter the body in the following 3 ways:

  • Dermal: when skin and eyes are not protected, or when pesticides

soak through clothing.

  • Inhalation: by breathing, especially in closed spaces.
  • Ingestion: by swallowing, when eating, drinking, or smoking with

contaminated hands. Consequences of contamination can be very serious.

slide-67
SLIDE 67

Dermal - Contamination of the skin and eyes can cause:

  • Itching.
  • Burning of the skin, leaving scars.
  • Numbness or weakness of arms, legs,
