The University of Southampton’s Black Sea MAP (Maritime Archaeology Project) is one of the largest and most ambitious projects of its type ever undertaken. The project’s international team, funded by the Expedition and Education Foundation, a charitable foundation established to support maritime research, is surveying the Bulgarian waters of the Black Sea where thousands of years ago large areas of land were inundated as the water level rose after the last Ice Age.

The story so far

8

Using a variety of technologies, from geophysics and seismic survey, to environmental coring and 3D computer modelling, scientists aim to understand the changes in the Black Sea environment and its flood history over the last twenty thousand years.

Identifying ship wrecks

Further underwater survey with Remotely Operated and Autonomous Underwater vehicles (ROVs and AUVs) will allow us to dive down to its anaerobic depths to study the seafloor and the historic shipwrecks upon it.

STEM Scholar programme

10

The Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project (MAP)’s education programme is seeking 16 A-Level (or equivalent) Y12 students to join the project as STEM Scholars. The project offers a wealth of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning opportunities. It demonstrates applications of these subjects in the real world by real people.

Working with professionals

11

Black Sea MAP is a collaboration between three teams:

  • Science Team
  • Documentary Team
  • Education Team

Successful Scholars will have the opportunity to work with all three teams.

Residential project placement

15

Summer 2017

  • Either onshore at National

Oceanography Centre and the University of Southampton.

  • Or onboard the 2017 science research

vessel in the Black Sea.

  • Scholars will work towards producing a

scientific research or science communication project.

Gold CREST Award

16

Scholars will have the opportunity to work towards a Gold CREST Award. Gold Awards allow students to conduct real

  • research. They are longer-term projects that

require around 70 hours’ work, and are typically completed by 16-19 year olds. At Gold level, students’ work should contribute something new to the scientific or technological community or to a particular field

  • f study.
