The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Great Shelford Charity No: 245456 Sunday 29th January, 2017 – The Presentation of Christ 10.00 Parish Communion Hymns Opening: 408 Gradual: 44 Offertory: 338 Communion: 310 Final: 400 Gloria: Glory to God in the highest, And peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heav’nly King, almighty God and Father, We worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: Have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father: Receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, In the glory of God the Father, Amen.

Music John Rutter

Collect: Almighty and ever-living God, clothed in majesty, whose beloved Son was this day presented in the Temple, in substance of our flesh: grant that we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts, by your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen Sanctus/Benedictus: Holy, holy, holy, God ever reigning, Filling all the universe with glory, power and light. Blest is our redeemer, sent from God to save us, Hail and hosanna, glory in the height. Amen, Amen

Tune: Apsley - Alan Wilson

Agnus Dei: Jesus Lamb of God have mercy on us Jesus bearer of our sins have mercy on us Jesus redeemer of the world Give us your peace

John Rutter

8:00 Holy Communion 10:00 Parish Communion First Reading: Malachi 3. 1 - 5 Thus says the Lord God: See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight—indeed, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the LORD in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years. Then I will draw near to you for judgement; I will be swift to bear witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired workers in their wages, the widow, and the orphan, against those who thrust aside the alien, and do not fear me, says the LORD of hosts.

Second Reading: Hebrews 2. 14 - 18 Since the children share flesh and blood, Jesus himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of

  • Abraham. Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a

merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the

  • people. Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.

Gospel: Luke 2. 22 - 40 When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord’), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons.’ Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, ‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.’ And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’ There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him. Post Communion Prayer: Lord, you fulfilled the hope of Simeon and Anna, who lived to welcome the Messiah: may we, who have received these gifts beyond words, prepare to meet Christ Jesus when he comes to bring us to eternal life; for he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen Hello Children Where is Mary Mouse hiding today? We welcome everyone to this church and particularly families and their children. We are all children of God no matter what our age and young children are our future. There are books, colouring sheets and pens provided in the children's corner which they are encouraged to use. • Gt. & Lt. Shelford Primary School Candlemas Service: You are invited to join the school at their Candlemas

Service at St Mary's on Thu. 2nd Feb. at 2.30pm. All are welcome. Christmas Alms totalled £779. Your generosity has enabled us to send £411 to Christian Aid and £368 to the Children’s Society. Our overall giving through the regular Sunday Alms will be posted on the Church Noticeboard. Harriet’s Christmas Cake. The raffle for Harriet’s cake was very well supported and raised almost £200. Over the year her hand made cards have also been on sale and she made a simnel cake which was raffled at the Deanery Spring Fair. So, in 2016, using her initiative and skills, she raised over £240 for St Mary’s and £65 for the Deanery. Thank you Harriet for a splendid effort. What happens to the donations from Sunday Coffee? We have just sent £365 to the Malawi Association for Christian Support and retained £350 in the main Church account. Thank you for your generosity and do please keep coming for ‘coffee’ after the morning service! Pilgrim group news: The Pilgrim house group met on Tuesday and discussed 'Making Peace.' We could not reconcile loving our enemies and participation in armed conflict. We raised more questions than answers. Who makes the best peace maker? We re-visited The Beatitudes which we found aspirational and sobering. Next week, January 31st we meet at 70 High Street and discuss 'Being Attentive' Cambridge Foodbank: Please support our collection which takes place next week, Sunday 5th February.

The Deanery Spring Fair is on Saturday 4 March, 10.00 to 12.00 noon in the Memorial Hall. Please keep the date free - the Deanery needs our support! We are now collecting items for the stalls. If you can help with books, bottles, gifts, toys, china & glass, home-made cakes & preserves, prizes, etc, please get in touch with Bob or Dorothy Doel (Tel: 843946). Books need to be with them by Sunday 26 February, other items any time ahead of the Fair. Parking: The school kindly permits us to use the playground for parking on Sunday mornings. Please could everyone who is reasonably mobile drive right down into the playground to park - on the tarmac, please, not the grass - rather than using the access space between the two sets of gates. The area next to the Community Room may be used by those with limited mobility. Church Security: Given the number of lead thefts from churches in East Anglia in recent weeks, the police and our Diocesan authorities have asked rural churches to be especially vigilant. This applies in particular to parish churches where roofing works are taking place, as the scaffolding could provide easy access. Our contractors secure the site at the end of the working day and the scaffolding is alarmed and monitored. However vigilant eyes and ears locally are particularly valuable, so if you see anything suspicious around the churchyard at night or over the weekends, please report it directly to the police. Major Roof Repairs: The project is making good progress; currently the contractors are ahead of schedule. If this continues, we are likely to see things concluding in mid Feb., with the removal of the scaffolding later next

  • month. The monitored roof alarm system will be fitted in the next two weeks so that the roof will be well

protected once the scaffolding is removed. Churches Sustainability Review: Parishes attention has been drawn to the English Churches and Cathedrals Sustainability Review survey which has been launched by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and is looking to establish sustainable ways forward for churches. The reviewing panel is keen to hear both from relevant organisations and from individual churches, so parishes are being urged to respond

  • directly. Both office holders and parishioners are being encouraged to respond to the survey. The link can be

found at (https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/english-churches-and-cathedrals-sustainability-review) and there is an explanatory press release at (https://www.gov.uk/government/news/call-for-evidence-to- churches-sustainability-review-launched). Responses to the survey must reach the reviewing panel by 31st January 2017 and the panel’s recommendations are to be published in Spring 2017. Alms Giving 2017: The alms on the first Sunday of each month will be donated to Shelford School and for the remaining Sundays in January to Wintercomfort. Alms can be gift aided provided your giving is in an envelope marked ’Alms’ and with your PIN. Alms not in envelopes must be placed in the alms bowl as you come into church. This stands on the offertory box at the back of church, near the back pew.
