  3. Master Transportation Plan Goal 2: Move More People Without More Traffic. Provide more travel choices and reduce the relative proportion of single occupant-vehicle (SOV) travel through Transportation Demand Management (TDM), telecommuting, and travel shifts to other modes including transit, carpooling, walking, and bicycling. Strategies: 2. Focus on minimizing person delay across modes rather than focusing exclusively on minimizing vehicle delay. 3. Encourage the use of environmentally sustainable modes, including bicycling, walking, transit, carpooling, and telecommuting 3

  4. Master Transportation Plan General Policy B: Support the Design and Operation of Complete Streets Design and operate a comprehensive network of Arlington’s local and arterial streets to enable safe access by all user groups including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit vehicles and users, and motorists of all ages and abilities, allowing these users to access a full range of daily activities. Example Pedestrian Policy: Provide straight, level, unimpeded and appropriately-designated pedestrian travel whenever feasible. Above: City of Elizabeth, NJ Example Bicycle Policy: Provide high-quality bicycling facilities as a part of all street improvement projects. 4

  5. Rosslyn Sector Plan (adopted July 23, 2015) Vision principles (p. 49) 3. Rosslyn will be a walkable neighborhood connecting people with community and choices. Goals and Policies (pp. 62-63): Transportation Goal #3: Transform the pedestrian and bicycle network into a safer, more attractive and more accessible place to walk and bike. 5

  6. Rosslyn Sector Plan Pedestrian Facilities Goals and Policies (pp. 62-64): T7: Improve the walking experience with wider sidewalks, new walkway connections, strategies to reduce topographic barriers, safer street crossings and enhancement of streetscape aesthetics. P5: Complete a new master plan for Gateway Park that calls for removing the existing superstructure and achieving a public park with the flexibility to accommodate a variety of park uses that enhance the overall park experience for Rosslyn’s growing population while providing an urban aesthetic that identifies this as a prominent gateway. Curb space priority #2: Provide curb nubs for pedestrian safety. 6

  7. Lynn Street and Martha Custis Trail Improvements Along westbound Lee Highway, the multi-use Martha Custis Trail is being widened to 16 feet and shifted away from the travel lanes. On Fort Myer Drive, at westbound Lee Highway, VDOT has built a new curb extension on the south side of the intersection, reducing Fort Myer Drive, briefly, from four lanes to three, and creating a widened (14’) sidewalk there. Project completion: Spring 2020. 7 Westbound Lee Highway 2018 (at top) and 2020 (bottom). Image: VDOT.
