Replaces Deteriorating 80 to 100-Year- Old Pipes Upgrades and Extends the Life of the Sewer System Protects Public Health, Property, and Our Environment

• This project is the second of two phases of sewer repair in the area.
• Phase 1 construction was completed in July 2020.
• Phase 2 is currently in design with construction anticipated to begin in summer of 2021.

• Over 7,000 feet of public sewer pipes will be

repaired or replaced in the South Portland- Burlingame area.

• Three different construction methods will be used:
• Open cut
• Pipe Bursting
• Pipe Lining (CIPP)
• Night work/extended hours proposed in six

locations.

• Interstate 5 to the west
• S Taylors Ferry Road to the south
• S Macadam Avenue to the east
• S Lowell Street to the north
• The Hillsdale Sewer Repair Projects are

Construction Method: Open Trench

Crews deliver materials and stores them in the right-of- way.

Crews cut and dig a

• trench. Material is

hauled away by trucks.

Crews install the new pipe and backfills the trench.

Crews temporarily patch the trench before returning later to restore the street.

Construction Method: Pipe Bursting

Crews weld a new pipe together and lay it out in the street.

Crews dig insertion and receiving shafts.

A bursting head shatters the existing pipe and pulls the new pipe in place behind it.

Crews connect laterals and temporarily patch the shafts before returning later to restore the street.

Construction Method: Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) Lining

Crews access the pipe through a manhole.

Crews insert a flexible liner into the existing

• pipe. Steam or UV

light is applied to cure the liner.

The liner hardens to seal cracks and form a new smooth pipe within the old.

• Some repairs will likely require night work
• r extended hours to complete.
• Environmental Services will apply for a

noise variance to enable the contractor to work both days and nights in certain locations.

SW Sweeney Street between SW Kelly and SW Macadam avenues. 4. SW Vermont Street near the intersection with SW Corbett Avenue. 5. SW Macadam Avenue just south of SW Miles Street. 6. SW Terwilliger Boulevard just south of SW Troy Street.
