  2. Why Sixth Form at Queens’? As a stepping stone to: • Further education • Employment Why Queens’? • A supportive and challenging environment • Dedicated Sixth Form facilities • A range of extra curricular activities • Excellent exam results Above all – to continue learning.

  3. Student Achievement 2014 • A2 level UCAS point average 309 (B = 100 points) (2012 – 312) 99% Pass rate 53% at grades A* ‐ B (2011 ‐ 51%, 2012 – 56%) Our AS grades put Queens’ Sixth Form in the top 10% of schools in the country for academic success. • University: ‐ 120 students went on to university last year ‐ Many at ‘red ‐ brick/Russell Group’ universities including Cambridge ‐ 160 applicants so far this year including 4 Oxbridge applicants and 7 Medicine / Veterinary Science

  4. Ways of meeting our aims: ‐ Optional subjects & core programme inc. PSE & Games ‐ 16 hours private study per week ‐ Compulsory private study periods (no ‘free’ periods) ‐ Attendance / punctuality monitoring ‐ Supported study ‐ Form tutor mentoring ‐ Progress tracking and intervention

What we offer outside of the classroom (extra ‐ curricular) A few examples: – Focus Newspaper – 6th Form run debates and assemblies – 6th form post holders – Head Students – Educational travel: Russia, Auschwitz, Prague, Slapton, Devon – Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme – CSLA Sports Leadership training – Gap year opportunities – 6 th Form committee / Student Voice – World challenge – Inter ‐ house sport – Sports Academy – Business Academy – CCF

  6. What we offer outside of the classroom (pastoral) – Careers advice – Specialist form tutor team – PSE programme and 6th form games – Buddies, Prefects, Paired Reading; Classroom helpers, Peer Mentoring – Charity work

The UCAS University Applications process • Year 12: ‐ UCAS Higher Education Convention – March 2015 ‐ Higher Education module in PSE – summer term ‐ UCAS day in enrichment week (summer term) ‐ 2 uni visits allowed during term time in Year 12 ‐ University of Herts – school leavers convention summer 2015 ‐ Oxbridge / Medicine – prospective students (many A/A*s at GCSE, predicted 4 As at AS Level): programme organised by Mr Rooney including mock interviews, visits, subject based enrichment opportunities and talks by current students

  8. Students will want to know about!! – The dress code (HANDBOOK GIVEN OUT DURING INDUCTION WEEK) – Limited paid employment – Mobile phones; MP3players – 6th Form Centre – Home study (privileges) – Places to go during study periods

Packages we offer – 4 AS Levels (for most students) or – A vocational course (BTEC or Applied AS) and one or more AS levels Extras : – Sports Academy for talented sports students alongside a normal curriculum (Sports Academy Open Evening to be held on December 1st) – Careers (Business) Academy for selected students

Points to consider – all courses in the options booklet – why entry criteria are so important – choosing a sustainable package – the UCAS tariff encourages a full timetable – 4 subjects in Year 12 – there will always be exceptions to the rule – Heads of Department will make decisions on an individual basis – If results do not go your way – DON’T PANIC!

  12. The importance of entry criteria… • Minimum – 5 A ‐ Cs at GCSE, • 5 A ‐ Bs for 4 AS Levels and a GCSE APS score of 46 or above • Each course has it’s own criteria • Eg: Maths ‐ A at GCSE and test Geography – B at GCSE • Heads of Department make the final decision, they will use their discretion

  13. What happens next? -An initial note of interest (forms in pack) (Dec 19 th ) -An interview at school concerning courses (February 2015) -Application form including subject choices (March 2015) -Letter of provisional acceptance (April/May 2015) -Induction days (25 th – 26 th June 2015) -GCSE results day (August 2015) -Enrolment at start of term (September 2015)
