As the Village updates its Sign Regulations, the following general concepts should be kept in mind:

▪ The case clarified when municipalities may impose content- based restrictions on signage ▪ Primarily associated with freedom of speech protected by the 1st and 14th Amendments, including content relating to religious, political, or ideological messaging ▪ Since the 2015 court decision, many municipalities have taken steps to ensure their Sign Codes comply with the ruling by amending any language that may impose content-based restrictions on signage
