Global supply-demand of oil & gas issues: peak oil (2015 -2025), peak gas (2020-2040); demand trend shift to Asia Climate change issues: opportunities for NRE, “dark age” for coal, unless using clean coal technology and CCS (opportunity for oil and gas expertise) Geopolitical environment: emergence of China as consumer and worldwide presence of China as major E&P player Total strategy and R&D Challenges Total's perspectives in NRE for future of energy: Total is seriously developing NRE (including un-conventional) for future energy

Global Overview of Energy Challenge

Topics covered:

slide-5
SLIDE 5

Fast evolution of economical model for Total’s Projects − strong volatility…(prices of oil, consumption,..) − industrial projects face dramatic cost increase Abundant oil reserves, but dominated by a small group of countries (National Oil Companies) acess to resources more difficult Evolution of markets − Consumers change their habits in OECD countries − Growth of consumption move towards Asia Growing concern for environmental and social matters

The identity challenge: provide reference points in a changing world Ethics, Fairness, Contract The competitiveness challenge: the talents’ war Attraction, Training, Retention, Diversity The acceptability challenge Externally: education, support for local business development, “nationalization” of work forces Internally: sense of belonging and pride

HR Challenges, a shared commitment

Take part to the Education development in the countries where the activity

  • f TOTAL is substantial

Detect where the local education scheme may take advantage of foreign cooperation Respect the local educationsystems, while bringing added value Use the Education Network Set up specific projets

Core R&D challenges: securing the future of energy

Discovery, characterization and development of resources including renewable resources Competitiveness and market fit − Petroleum products, refining, petrochemicals − Energy efficiency for users of the products − End of life issues Efficiency and reliability of facilities, energy efficiency Environmental issues − Water, soil, air, biodiversity, − Life cycles − Residual gases, CO2

Developing deep offshore oil : Flow Assurance Engineer Liquefying natural Gas : Yemen LNG Building up a new refinery (integrated petrochemical complex) in Saudi Arabia : Jubail Discovering the Polymers of Petrochemicals Petrochemicals, Corporate Licensing Manager

Focus on major industrial Projects and Products

Topics

Indonesia will build an integrated refinery –petrochemical complex:

  • East Java (Tuban TPPI)
  • West Java (Banten Bay Refinery)
  • East Kalimantan

Part II: Follow Up Thoughts Concerning Energy Education and Research in Indonesia

NEEDS FOR SERIOUS THOUGHT ON ENERGY ISSUES

− Energy issues, especially in economics, planning, and policy are not addressed explicitly − Energy technology is dealt separately and partially − Who address the energy sector holistically and in integrated fashion? − What about Indonesia energy security? − How to ensure the energy supply sustained? − And many more questions …. Who should care? − How to develop university – industry collaboration in energy issues − Central vs. Local Governments − Do our government officers have relevant background to do the job of decision making in energy problems? − Can our government officers deal with energy problem with sufficient capabilities? Are they really aware of Indonesia energy specific problems? SHOULD THE GOVERNMENT BE THE ONE ?

It has been thought formal education specializes on energy (technology, management, economic and policy). Existing Programs Petroleum Engineering oil and gas, geothermal (Total/IFP has been involved in establishing Master Program and providing scholarships) ENEMBA (Energy MBA) program, School of Business & Management energy project management (fossil & NRE), now inactive Chemical Engineering have several classes, which focus on chemical process of some energy types (refinery, oil and gas surface facilities, gas processing, biomass based energy, etc) Electrical Engineering electrical power There is no special study program on integrated energy technology

Formal education specializes on energy issues
