US DOT Numbers

As of September 1, 2018, Massachusetts has adopted Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations under 540 CMR 2.22 requiring intrastate motor carriers in Massachusetts to obtain and display a United States Department of Transportation (USDOT)

• number. The RMV has not enforced this until Release 2 was
• implemented. Detailed information is available at

https://www.mass.gov/regulatory-bulletin/new-usdot-number- requirement-for-intrastate-cmvs, but the basic rule is: Any registrant that has a commercially registered vehicle (to mean a commercial plate) with a registered weight of 10,001 or more (11,000 since we do everything to the next highest 1,000) lbs is required to have a DOT number. Commercially registered vehicles that are used solely for private use The current definition for a private passenger vehicle states:… or which is a pickup truck or cargo van of the 1/2 TON, 3/4 TON or one TON class as per manufacturer’s description of said vehicle;… The term ½, ¾ and one ton are no longer accepted industry standard terms for these trucks The RMV is going to initially clarify the term “One Ton Class” to mean any vehicle with a GVWR, as specified by the manufacturer of 14,000 lbs or less.

Plate Cancelations

As of Release 2, all plate cancelations result in the Plate Return Receipt being sent to the registrant If the Plate Cancelation is processed through:

• 1. My RMV by the registrant - Receipt
• 2. eServices portal by the agent/Carrier - Confirmation

Under no circumstances should anyone other than the registrant or the lessee be using My RMV to process any transaction.

Trailer Renewal

 There is a specific circumstance where a trailer cannot be renewed on line due to the three character CAR insurance code that is associated with the trailer Registration

• The specific circumstance is when the CAR

code reflects an insurer that is no longer writing policies in MA

• In ALARS, these codes were not validated as

part of the renewal process, they are in ATLAS

• If an insured contacts you with this issue

(Message will be that the trailer is uninsured), you should……….
