Background

  • Historically two WICs

– A nurse-led WIC and Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at SMTC - 7 days per week until 10pm – “GP-led” WIC at GWHC - 8am until 8pm days a week – Conditions presenting to the GWHC typical of a walk in centre - many of them being classed clinically as minor.

From July 1st 2016

  • Following public consultation unregistered walk in

activity transferred from GHWC to the SMTC

  • Workforce at STMC increased and includes GP
  • Single multidisciplinary WIC for the provision of

both minor injuries and illness within one location in the city.

  • Continuation of the GP practice for registered

patients at Guildhall Walk.

  • Includes some sit and wait style appointment and

some extended hours.

– Monday and Friday from 8am to 8pm – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 8am to 6.30pm – Saturday and Sunday 8am to midday

  • Ophthalmology
  • ENT
  • Dermatology
  • Audiology
  • 24 hour cardiac monitoring
  • These are alternatives to referral into secondary

care for non complex patient conditions.

  • The service offers shorter waiting times and

focuses on education for both patient and referring clinician.

Future of GHWC practice

  • CCG planning for the delivery of integrated

primary and community care

  • CCG has decided to suspend the procurement

and to extend the current interim contract with the incumbent for a further period of 12 to 18 months.

– Changes to workforce – Increased workload – Triage or telephone first models of care – Urgent Primary Care being delivered at scale across the city potentially from a number or hubs – Access to routine primary care 7 days a week for the whole population 2019/ 2020
