  4. What is the right path for me? • Technical Degree: focus is on a technical, hands on field. Ex: Electrician, HVAC/ Plumbing, Auto Body Repair, Cosmetology, Esthetician,Auto Mechanics, Dental Hygenist, etc • Associates Degree: two year degree at a community college and in most instances transfer to a four year school to count toward a Bachelor's degree. • Bachelor's Degree: Required for specific j obs/ careers: Teachers, Engineers, Nurses, Financial Planning, and most management positions in companies. • Masters and Doctorate: S pecialized degree, usually 2 or more years beyond a Bachelors. Ex: Doctors, Dentists, Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapists, etc. • Military: ROTC or Enlistment, both have options that can help pay college tuition • Full time Employment-UPS , FedEx and many other companies have tuition reimbursement programs to help pay for college. Know yourself when choosing your path!

Gather Information! ➢ Many college representatives and military personnel are on the DHS campus either during lunch or seminar. ➢ If you want to visit a college go to the admissions web page of the school you are interested in. College Admission Criteria ➢ Community College or Technical S chool: High S chool Diploma ➢ 4 year Public S tate S chool (KS U, PS U, ES U, & FHS U, WS U): • Receive a 21 on the ACT or Rank in the top third of your graduating class AND • Receive a 2.0 GPA in the Qualified Admissions Criteria (S ee US D 232 Course Guide) ➢ University of Kansas: • Complete the Kansas Qualified Admissions Curriculum AND • 3.0 high school GPA/ 24 ACT or 3.25 high school GPA and 21 ACT ➢ Private/ Out of S tate S chools: Check individual schools

  7. College Application Process 1. Apply for admission online! 2. Complete scholarship application for the college (if separate) 3. S elf report your grades, GPA, and ACT scores. If you need a transcript sent, please email your counselor or Mrs. Evans in S tudent S ervices. 4. Pay application fee 5. S end in JCCC transcript at end of year, if applicable A beginning October 1 st 6. Fill out FAFS

  8. Letters of Recommendation S ome colleges require recommendations from teachers and counselors. For the strongest possible recommendation: • Ask teachers, counselors or administrators at least 2-4 weeks in advance to write a recommendation. • Go to the S tudent S ervices website and fill out the Counselor's Recommendation S tudent S urvey (under “ College and Career Planning” section). This survey is necessary so the counselor can write a strong recommendation. • Check back with your counselor one week prior to the due date to see if the counselor needs any further information. • If you are putting your counselor’ s email into an application online, be sure to notify us that you have done so.

  9. College Admission Tests Only used for admission into 4 year schools. However, some colleges as well as community colleges will use ACT scores for placement and eligibility for some scholarships. ➢ ACT: October 27 th , register by September 28 th (DHS is a test site!) • December 9 th , register by November 4 th • • Register at www.actstudent.org ➢ S AT: • October 6 th , Late Registration Deadline: September 26 th . • Register atwww.collegeboard.com

  10. Local Colleges Scholarship Deadlines ✓ November 1 st : • KU and KS U-Will most likely accept December ACT scores if you do better than on a previous test. You must call and report this to the admissions office as soon as possible. • tate University-For competition scholarships November 1 st -No Wichita S cholarship deadline is December 1 st . Exceptions! Freshman Merit S ✓ Early S pring: Pittsburg S tate University, Emporia S tate University, and Washburn University. Check individual schools for specific deadlines. ✓ April 1 st : Johnson County Community College ***Keep in Mind: Your ACT or S AT score as well as your GPA are HUGE factors when colleges are awarding university (merit) scholarships. Activity and club involvement as well as Leadership roles/ positions are also important.

  11. Additional Scholarships • Any local, national, state, or specific college scholarships that are received will be posted on the DHS S tudent S ervices website. This will be updated on a regular basis, so check this site often. • DHS S cholarships that only DHS students can apply for will be posted in February. (Cat Booster’ s, DTA, VFW etc.) • Watch out for scams or any scholarship search that asks for money. • There are many websites that have valuable scholarship information. S pend the time to search for them!

Senior Shortened Day * All passing grades first semester * S tudents in KS HS AA activities must have at least 5 classes, Teacher’ s Aide DOES NOT count! * S tudent must be in good standing-attendance (no excessive tardies) and discipline referrals are included in this! * All fees must be paid * Parent Approval * Classes must be in sequential order * Applications available in October * S chedules will be changed once completed application is turned in, on a first come first serve basis!
