TAA

  • Teacher-As-Adviser is designed to assist students in developing the

skills needed to make wise decisions that enable them to take full advantage of the curriculum and track progress throughout the year. Through the presentation of current information concerning career selection, graduation requirements, and course offerings during individual and group advisement sessions, the caseload manager and/or support personnel becomes the advisor to the student. Time will be used to foster better communication between our program, students, parents and/or guardians. Students and the teacher will track performance weekly during the advisement period. To support understanding of the advisement program, caseload managers will use Georgia’s Teacher as Adviser Framework for supporting/advising students.

SAM

  • Student Achievement Model (SAMs) teaches social skills. The SAMs

model fits within our Positive Behavior Supports framework and utilizes a social skills curriculum with a defined set of basic social behaviors, self- control strategies, and active learning skills encompassing adult relations, peer relations, school rules, and classroom skills. As basic skills are mastered, more complex, and advanced skills are taught and practiced.

  • This model is also a classroom management system which encourages

participation and cooperation in classroom activities. The opportunity to earn points and then use these points to purchase desired items, which are age appropriate, is a motivator for student success. Students move through three tiers (Foundations, Progress, and Transitions) as they demonstrate social skill proficiency.

  • Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports

(PBIS) is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture and needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional and academic success.

PBIS overview

  • PBIS incentives provide positive opportunities for students to

participate in activities that reward their positive behaviors. It also increases positive school climate for students and staff. Some of these incentives include:

  • Fun Friday (game room, movie gallery, basketball games for students and staff)
  • P.R.I.D.E. Bucks (student currency for demonstrating being Prepared, Respectful,

Independent, Determined, Empathetic)

  • School Store
  • Birthday Recognition (students and staff)
  • PBIS Fitness Center
  • School Salon (Signature Design Salon & Spa)
  • Jean Days, Early Release Passes for Staff

Staff vs. Student Game Day

  • Students learn sportsmanship and are encouraged

to participate in game day every month in which they play against staff team members.

  • This provides opportunities for positive rapport-

building with staff members.

  • Students are able to see staff members model

character education traits.

  • Students are able to practice specific social skills

(appropriate conversation, maintaining physical boundaries).

School Store

  • On a weekly students can purchase desired

tangibles with the earned PRIDE bucks.

  • Students earn PRIDE bucks for random times in

which they exhibit school-wide expectations independently.

  • This incentives provide opportunities for students

to make a connection with appropriate behavior and money management as the school store utilizes P.R.I.D.E. bucks as student currency.

PBIS Fitness Center

  • All students are encouraged to demonstrate

mastery of the school-wide expectations in order to earn time to go to the fitness center to work on the following skills:

  • Sportsmanship
  • Respect for others
  • Maintaining physical boundaries
  • Learn appropriate ways to use gym equipment to help

aid in their personal fitness goals

Signature Design Salon & Spa

  • Salon employees completed and submitted an application with

references for positions (stylist, barber, nail technician, esthetician and receptionist) in the salon.

  • Salon employees participated in interviews and received letters
  • ffering them the positions in which they’re expected to exhibit

appropriate social skills.

  • Students are able to receive services (hair cut, hair wash/style,

nail art and make up) when they have appropriate behaviors and P.R.I.D.E. bucks to pay for the service.

  • The salon has significantly reduced student disciplinary issues

and has increased students’ independent use of their social skills.

PBIS Physical Education

  • On a weekly basis, as part of Fun Friday, students

are able to select going to the gym, basketball court

  • r outside to enhance their physical education

through games, activities and tournaments.

  • This reduces office discipline referrals as it gives

students an opportunity to choose specific physical education activities that interest them and they’re able to play with friends, different teachers and staff.

Calming Room

  • The purpose of the calming room is to provide a therapeutic

intervention when students become aware that they are becoming upset and are in need of de-escalation and sensory support.

  • Students may request an opportunity to go to the calming room,

which is encouraged, however there are times that teachers take students to the calming room as a proactive measure when they notice students becoming overwhelmed. Only one student is allowed in the calming room, with a teacher, at a time to offer privacy when de-escalating.

  • The calming room has sensory stimulators such as:
  • Therapeutic rocking chair, interactive bubble tube, giant bean bag,

soothing music, therapeutic ball, sand box, therapeutic mat, etc.

PBIS Game Room

  • The PBIS Game Room is part of the Fun Friday

rotation of options students can choose from when selecting the activity they’d like to participate in for demonstrating school wide expectations during the

  • week. The PBIS game room expectations are

reviewed weekly prior to students going to the game room.

  • Some of the games students can play are card

games, Playstation, pool games and board games.

Kona Ice Day

  • As a PBIS initiative, students are encouraged to

participate in Kona Ice Day. Students can purchase these snow cones during Fun Friday.

  • As a PBIS incentive for the staff, Kona Ice is

provided free to all teachers and staff which helps increase positive school climate.

  • This activity has enhanced student buy-in of PBIS.

Fun Friday

  • Fun Friday weekly PBIS initiative that students earn

after exhibiting mastery of their behaviors. Students participate in all the fun filled activities which includes edible treats (candy, popcorn, chips and drinks) and viewing character education-based movies.

  • Students who earned Fun Friday will be rewarded

with admission into different activities

  • This activity decreases inappropriate behaviors and

gives students a chance to build self-esteem and receive recognition for their positive behavior.
