SLIDE 7 –Eric Landy
“If schools are preparing us for the future why isn't there a course about youtube?”
SLIDE 8 Breathing Break #1 I am F’n breathing - otherwise I’d be dead!!!
SLIDE 9 –Destructo-Boy
“If I'm not able to sleep in class why do I have to do school work at home?”
SLIDE 11
SLIDE 12
how does it feel?
SLIDE 13
why can't you just…
aka “we’ve all been anxious….” kinderseparation vs “all the time” worries vs anxiety
SLIDE 14
SLIDE 15
maybe it's just
SLIDE 16
autism
aspergers
behaviour
separation
depression
fake-out worries flu ptsd thyroid
something they’ll grow out of
learning disability
SLIDE 17
it is what it is
(don’t get distracted by the flipping iceberg)
SLIDE 18 identification in grade 4 for grade 10 success
in school work with person not on behaviours it’ll be uncomfortable for everyone it isn’t quick
SLIDE 19
SLIDE 20
SLIDE 21
it does not have to be debilitating

why the increases?
SLIDE 26
Where to start?
(the home-school connection)
SLIDE 27
Tools & Rules
SLIDE 28 Self Awareness
Create Common Language
- zones
- how does your engine run
- stress management-
- battery
- bucket filling
- balance scales
SLIDE 29
SLIDE 30
Whole school approach
SLIDE 31
Tool VS Toy (don’t remove a strategy without providing a replacement) ((even if it’s super annoying))
SLIDE 32
supporting VS enabling
SLIDE 33
but damn does it ever look behavioural….
There’s a reason for the Behaviours
SLIDE 34
we are also doing a better job 120 —> 60
SLIDE 35 early intervention
the sooner the better….and reduces after affects/effects
SLIDE 36
creating/composing VS consuming
SLIDE 37
so…..
SLIDE 38
SLIDE 39
“The Landy Rules”
SLIDE 40 The anxious learner needs to be at school every day.
SLIDE 41
Being at school does not always mean being in the classroom
SLIDE 42
Being in the classroom does not mean doing the same work
SLIDE 43
You will need to push them
SLIDE 44
it’s a fine line between supporting & enabling the anxiety
SLIDE 45
Anxious kids are smart.
SLIDE 46 Anxiety can be
(especially generalized)
SLIDE 47
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is important
SLIDE 48
Sometimes meds are needed (and week 6 sucks)
SLIDE 49
self-soothing strategies will annoy you
SLIDE 50
transitions (and new things) suck
SLIDE 51
staying calm also sucks
SLIDE 52
- utsiders & family members
& friends will be critical
SLIDE 53
it’s a marathon, not a sprint
SLIDE 54
Communication is Key
(neither home nor school can/ should work on this by themselves)
SLIDE 55
Mind you….
SLIDE 56 What is in the Day?
- bells
- gym
- music class
- hallways
- noise noise noise (not always
what you think it is though)
SLIDE 57 SCAFFOLDING CALM:
CAN’T JUST EXPECT STUDENTS TO “JUST DO IT” (BREATHING, SITTING CALMLY, TALKING ABOUT THINGS) WITHOUT GUIDED PRACTICE
SLIDE 58 Scaffold Calm
- Try these strategies
- Mindful walking
- Mindful tasting
- Calming sequence
- How to breathe
- Take stuffy for a ride!
- Bubble breathing
- Candle/flower
SLIDE 59 YOUR regulation is VERY important
We learn how to self regulate by first “being regulated” by a significant other
SLIDE 60
#2 Relationship
Relationship is key to: Regulation, Engagement & Learning
SLIDE 61
Physical environment has ability to C0-REGULATE
SLIDE 62 Physical environment has ability to stress you or calm you
SLIDE 63
noise (both audio and visual)
SLIDE 64
We learn through our senses
WE are stressed through our senses
we are soothed through our senses
SLIDE 65
Mouth Touch Listen Smell Movement Sight Connection
SLIDE 66
Deep pressure Heavy work
SLIDE 67 If it distracts you = TOY
If it helps you focus = TOOL
(and we are often more comfortable with the tools that work(ed) for us)
SLIDE 68
sometimes things that “work” don’t work forever….
SLIDE 69 tools & toys
- Friends for Life
- Zones of Regulation
- MindUp
- iPad
SLIDE 70 yeah but…..

SLIDE 71 The Technology “Discussion”
distraction
balance blue/yellow light consuming vs creating
SLIDE 72 Self Control is NOT the same as Self-Regulation
Self regulation allows you to have enough energy is your battery to have self control Examples – lack of sleep Burns energy to deal with stress Self control is using our thinking (PFC) to inhibit impulses, to pay attention, do what others want from us. Hard to do if our battery is drained. Self control is a result of being self regulated

SLIDE 74 Challenges and Screams
talk about mental wellness you’re not alone yes, it’s tricky there is no “one” fix (but can’t “not” do something)
SLIDE 75
SLIDE 76 What do you see? Questions?
from early-learners on up….
