Background: The ‘17-18 SEPs were reviewed at UQUAC and UEC, it became apparent that (i) there were too many objecDves in many plans and (ii) many of the objecDves were the very opposite of

  • SMART. The purpose of SEPs is to focus our change efforts in the most producDve ways. We

also need to be able to evaluate what did – and did not – work. PVC Educa/on – Professor Kathy Armour

By the end of this session:

  • You should be able to write a SMART objec+ve

Let’s start with some defini+ons

Ø A Goal is a broad primary outcome. Ø A Strategy is the approach you take to achieve a goal. Ø An Objec+ve is a measurable step you take to achieve a strategy. Ø A Tac+c is a tool you use in pursuing an objec/ve associated with a strategy.

Objec+ve

Noun

A specific result that a person or system aims to achieve within a /me frame and with available resources. In general, objec/ves are more specific and easier to measure than goals. Objec/ves are basic tools that underlie all planning and strategic ac/vi/es. They serve as the basis for crea/ng policy and evalua/ng performance.

  • bjec+ve

əbˈdʒɛktɪv/ A structured methodology that can be applied to a hierarchy of

  • bjec/ves and which provides verifiable and transparent

trajectories to support a desired outcome becoming an aLainable reality.

Probably the most important considera/on – providing evidence (for you and others!) of achieving the objec/ve. You will need to record your evidence and should include a measure that monitors progress. Situa/ons can change and it may be necessary to renego/ate

  • bjec/ves. Importance of monitoring progress.

Closely linked to measurable and should establish the viability of the

  • bjec/ve before any work begins. Challenging objec/ves are OK –

but failure must not be built into them. How can you decide if it's aLainable?

  • You know it is measurable.
  • Others have done it successfully (before you, or somewhere

else.)

  • It's theoreDcally possible (i.e. clearly not 'not achievable'.)
  • You have the necessary resources, or at least a realisDc chance
  • f geVng them.
  • You've assessed the limitaDons.

If achievable, but not relevant or realis/c, why are you doing it? Focus on outcomes, not the means of achieving them. You need to know:

  • Why you are doing it?
  • Will it make the difference you are looking for?
  • Does it deliver wider priori/es?

The main reason something is achievable, but not relevant is related to (someone’s) priority.

But oPen beOer to consider M A / R S T:

pecific S

The detail is important. You will know your objec/ve is specific enough if:

  • Everyone who's involved knows that it includes them specifically.
  • Everyone involved can understand it.
  • Your objecDve is free from jargon.
  • You've defined all your terms.
  • You've used only appropriate language.

But oPen beOer to consider M A / R S T:

ime-restricted T

Time-restricted means se]ng deadlines. Provides focus and urgency Without deadlines your objec/ve isn't measurable. But deadlines must be specific and realis/c, or the task isn't achievable.
