  2. Why consider dual-credit? • Benefits of College Enrollment • Taking classes early could allow students to free up the length of time in college for internships, additional majors, study abroad, and/or graduating early. • Rigorous academic challenge similar to AP • AP – teaching toward the AP test, more rigorous and teaches great preparation/study skills. No guarantee for college credit. • Dual-Credit – College experience, guaranteed credit (with passing grade), higher academic challenge than HS. • Considered an NKU Student • Access to Gym, library, athletic/special campus events, learn to use systems like Canvas, and free tutoring • Join NKU student groups

  3. Why consider dual credit? • Words of Caution: • Students need time management and study skills to keep up with their college course work IN ADDITION to their high school coursework and extracurricular activities. • It is important that students understand they must communicate with their professor if they do not understand the material or have issues with grades/the class. • Students are building NKU COLLEGE GPA’s. Poor grades will follow students at NKU. If a student opts to apply to other schools, they will have to submit their NKU transcript. Poor grades can also mean reduced KEES money earned. • Students should take a maximum of 4 or 5 classes a semester, regardless of where they’re earning their dual credit.

  4. Transferability • Any class at NKU that is considered “general education” has to transfer as general education credit by Kentucky state law to any other public institution in the state of Kentucky (i.e. to UK, UL, EKU, WKU, etc.). • For any public university outside of the state or any private college, it is up to the student and parent to contact that school to determine how their NKU courses will transfer. • Most schools will accept our credits, however, please verify with your intended school.

  5. What classes can students take at NKU Grant County? • Students have the option to take classes at NKU Grant County. • NKU’s course offerings at NKU Grant County for Fall 2020: • LDR 160 – Leadership Around the World • SOC 101 (Hybrid) – Global Inequalities • ENG 101 – College Writing • GLY 110 (Hybrid) – Earth Science w/ Lab • CMST 101 – Public Speaking • ENV 110 – Intro to Environmental Science • ENG 102 – Advanced College Writing • GLY 120 (Hybrid) – This Dangerous Earth • PHI 181 – Philosophers, Cultures, and Creativity • HIS 102 – US History before 1877 • POP 205 – Intro to Pop Culture

  6. What other classes can students take? • We also offer Career Exploration Tracks to allow students to take a sequence of classes to earn credit towards a potential major at NKU. • Currently, these Tracks include: • Computer Science • Criminal Justice • Cybersecurity • Organizational Leadership • Theatre • Visual Arts • World Languages (Spanish and Japanese)

  7. What other classes can students take? Campus and Online • NKU also welcomes all SBS students to take classes on NKU’s Highland Heights campus or online as permitted by their high school. • We recommend that those students meet with Norse Advising to identify the appropriate general education (or other) courses that a student needs to take in order to begin working towards a particular major/interest. • We will provide information to students about how to register for on campus and online classes once they’re admitted into our program. This information will be sent in their admission letter and via email. • Students choose classes from NKU’s catalog of offerings. • Students MUST meet any course prerequisites. • Courses can be found at http://classschedule.nku.edu.

  8. About the SBS Program • Additional Resources: • University Connect and Persist (UCAP) for additional assistance with financial, academic, and personal topics • Disability Programs and Services • Learning PLUS (tutoring and writing center) • Students taking classes on campus MUST follow NKU’s schedule, even when it conflicts with the high school schedule. E.g., if NKU is open and having classes during a snow day, you should in your NKU class. • Attend your first class or you may be dropped for nonattendance. • If your class is online, you should login the week before to make sure your class is showing up in Canvas.

  9. Program Eligibility • Requirements for entry: • Students must have a 3.0+ GPA • Students must have a qualifying ACT Composite (20+). • If a student has no ACT scores, they may be admitted into the program with their GPA and a letter of recommendation; however, eligible courses will be limited. • Must meet any course pre-requisites: • English, science and math courses all require specific ACT subscores. • Continued enrollment: Once in the program, students must earn a final grade of C or better in each of their courses to move on to the next semester.

  10. Program Costs • NKU dual-credit classes cost $58/credit hour (in 2019- 20). Most classes are 3-credit hours, so they cost $174/class. • Tuition subject to change based on the state of Kentucky. • Compare this to the cost of a college class for a traditional NKU student, which costs $1,239 for most classes. • Possible additional costs: • Cost of textbooks: $75-$200, on average, for new textbooks • Parking pass: $35/semester
