Just Thinking

Today’s Gospel is prophetic and beautiful, but also tragic in a way, telling the story of two very elderly people, Simeon and Anna, each of whom had been let in on a little secret by the Holy Spirit. What was that secret? That this

  • rdinary looking little kid from a backwater

village called Nazareth was the Son of God, the long-promised Messiah. There’s no way of knowing how long Simeon and Anna had known this secret, but I’d like to believe it was a long time because it was such a wonderful secret, and would have given them hope and pleasure for the whole time. Just think about you and I being in Simeon’s and Anna’s place. What would we have felt? I can’t speak for you, but I think one of my feelings would have been one of privilege, feeling honored at being told about this by God himself. Of course, being human and not as holy as Simeon and Anna, a little bit of unearned pride might have crept in -- you know, the “I know something you don’t know!!” syndrome. I’m pretty sure God would forgive that little slip though, because I’d also be feeling very humble, a feeling of, “Why in Heaven’s name did God choose me to tell? I’m pretty far down the pecking order around here!” When it came time to hold this little bundle, like many elderly men, I would have felt very excited, but the excitement would be mixed with just a bit of fear about dropping him, or that he’d take one look at me and bust out crying, or that he’d do what babies do at very inconvenient times sometimes. Telling the parents, especially the mom, what I knew about the child’s future would be awfully hard, just because it was worded so mysteriously, but that’s all the Spirit gave me to work with. And telling the mom, just a child herself, about her own fate would just about kill me. Handing the baby back to the mom would be hard in spite of my fears. How often does a guy get to hold God in his hands? I think my last thoughts of the day would be a weird mix

  • f contentment that my greatest wish -- to see

the Savior -- had actually happened, sadness for what I knew the child and his mom would endure, and a longing for eternal peace. I would be ready to die because the events I had just taken part in could never be topped. Fast forward to 2020: We get the chance to hold God in our hands and inside of us every time we go to mass. Simeon and Anna should be so lucky. Roger LeBouton, Lay Minister

SCAM ALERT CONTINUES

The “Fr. Louis needs your help….” scam is still continuing in Oshkosh. I would ask you to please contact the office if someone reaches out to you acting like me. I will NEVER call, text, or email you asking for contributions. As this scam continues on it breaks my heart knowing that our parishioners are losing money like this. Yours in Christ,

  • Fr. Louis

Becoming our Best Selves One Step at a Time

A few days ago I was going home from a visit at

  • Bethel. As I turned north from the driveway onto

Eagle Street, a squirrel began running across in front of me. We saw each other at the same time. I slowed down and the squirrel, three fourths of the way across, stopped in his tracks. He shook all

  • ver for a second or three, then, instead of finish-

ing his journey across, he ran back where he came from! Not unusual for a squirrel, but it reminded me of a common human behavior — not finishing things we start. Often we start doing things with very good inten- tions, but, for whatever reason, we give up. It may not matter much if it’s something like a do-it- yourself project that we suddenly realize we don’t have the skills for. It probably makes sense to give it up and hire a pro to get the project done. It mat- ters more with things that could affect our future. More next week. Roger LeBouton, Lay Minister

As a parish community, united in faith, hope, and love in our Lord Jesus Christ, and sustained by the Holy Eucharist, we are called to care for each other, at- tending particularly to those who may be separated from us physically, ensuring that no one is separated from us spiritually. Please help us do this by letting us know if you or a loved one is currently home-bound or residing in a health care facility. Even if there is already pastoral care available and being received, we are updating
