42.1: basic rule 42.2: prohibited 42.3: exceptions (= permitted)
42.1: use only wind and water to increase, maintain or decrease speed 42.2 (a) : pumping 42.2 (b) : rocking 42.2 (c) : ooching 42.2 (d) : sculling 42.2 (e) : repeated tacks
42.3 (a) : rolling to facilitate steering 42.3 (b) : exagerate rolling while tacking 42.3 (c) : one pump per wave 42.3 (d) : scull to close hauled 43.3 (g) : any mean to give help

42.1: Except when permitted in rule 42.3 or 45, a boat shall compete by using only the wind and water to increase, maintain or decrease her speed. Her crew may adjust the trim
bodies to propel the boat.
42.1: basic rule

Etc..
Sylvie HARLE (IJ-FRASH1) – V0.4 GB
(g) Any means of propulsion may be used to help a person or another vessel in danger.
42.3: exception
(h) To get clear after grounding or colliding with a vessel or object, a boat may use force applied by her crew or the crew of the other vessel and any equipment other than a propulsion engine. However, the use of an engine may be permitted by rule 42.3(i).

You can use any way to help ! You can push… but no motor !
Sylvie HARLE (IJ-FRASH1) – V0.4 GB
42.2: prohibited
Without limiting the application of rule 42.1, these actions are prohibited: (a) pumping: repeated fanning of any sail either by pulling in and releasing the sail or by vertical or athwartship body movement;
Video: 1.34 / 1.58
Sylvie HARLE (IJ-FRASH1) – V0.4 GB
42.3: exception
42.3 (c) Except on a beat to windward, when surfing (rapidly accelerating down the front of a wave) or planing is possible, the boat’s crew may pull in any sail in order to initiate surfing or planing, but each sail may be pulled in only once for each wave or gust of wind.
1 pump per wave allowed to initiate the surf or planning …when surfing conditions ! No surfing conditions no pump !
Video: 1.14
42.3 (e) If a batten is inverted, the boat’s crew may pump the sail until the batten is no longer inverted. This action is not permitted if it clearly propels the boat.
Sylvie HARLE (IJ-FRASH1) – V0.4 GB
Without limiting the application of rule 42.1, these actions are prohibited: (b) rocking: repeated rolling of the boat, induced by (1) body movement, (2) repeated adjustment of the sails or centreboard, or (3) steering;
42.2: prohibited
Video: 0.20
Sylvie HARLE (IJ-FRASH1) – V0.4 GB
42.3 (a) A boat may be rolled to facilitate steering. 42.3 (b) A boat’s crew may move their bodies to exaggerate the rolling that facilitates steering the boat through a tack or a gybe, provided that, just after the tack or gybe is completed, the boat’s speed is not greater than it would have been in the absence of the tack or gybe.
42.3: exception OK.. if no more speed after tack/gybe « Serpentine » OK.. if consistent with waves…
Sylvie HARLE (IJ-FRASH1) – V0.4 GB
Without limiting the application of rule 42.1, these actions are prohibited: (c) ooching: sudden forward body movement, stopped abruptly;
42.2: prohibited
Sylvie HARLE (IJ-FRASH1) – V0.4 GB
Without limiting the application of rule 42.1, these actions are prohibited: (d) sculling: repeated movement of the helm that is either forceful or that propels the boat forward or prevents her from moving astern;
Most often just before the start… ..or to pass a mark… 42.2: prohibited
Sylvie HARLE (IJ-FRASH1) – V0.4 GB
42.3: exception
(d) When a boat is above a close-hauled course and either stationary or moving slowly, she may scull to turn to a close-hauled course. (f) A boat may reduce speed by repeatedly moving her helm.
Scull in 1 direction to close-hauled No offset previous sculling! Not below close-hauled !
Sylvie HARLE (IJ-FRASH1) – V0.4 GB
Without limiting the application of rule 42.1, these actions are prohibited: (e) repeated tacks or gybes unrelated to changes in the wind or to tactical considerations
42.2: prohibited Most often in very light winds
Sylvie HARLE (IJ-FRASH1) – V0.4 GB
Pumping (repeated) with sheet/body Rocking (repeated) Sculling (repeated) One pump per wave Rolling tack/gybe (if no repeat, no more speed)
Use only wind and water while racing… No « paddle » effect … everything is permitted to help but basic
Scull in one direction to close-hauled
Sylvie HARLE (IJ-FRASH1) – V0.4 GB
Ooching Repeated tack/gybes without tactical reasons
Sylvie HARLE (IJ-FRASH1) – V0.4 GB
P1 SIGNALLING A PENALTY A member of the protest committee or its designated observer who sees a boat breaking rule 42 may penalize her by, as soon as reasonably possible, making a sound signal, pointing a yellow flag at her and hailing her sail number, even if she is no longer racing. A boat so penalized shall not be penalized a second time under rule 42 for the same incident.
