Who are we?
We are a graduate student-led organization whose goal is to plan and facilitate academic and social events and opportunities, provide a support network for all graduate students in the Department of Romance Languages, and represent the needs of ALL graduate students to the departmental administration
If you are a graduate student in the ROML Department, you are a member of the organization!

1. Organize social and academic events to benefit the graduate students of the Department of Romance Languages at the University of Georgia. 1. Create a space for graduate students to exchange scholarly and creative work among themselves as well as with professors from the Department of Romance Languages and other departments. 1. Create a network of communication and representation between graduate students and faculty within the Romance Languages Department. 1. Provide information about conferences and scholarly opportunities as well as useful information about local resources for incoming and current graduate students. 1. Create a network with graduate students from other departments at UGA as well as neighboring universities.

Hosted by the ROML Department Takes place at the beginning of February Great opportunity to practice presenting a research paper in a professional and local environment Look out for CFP in the Fall!

- -- Interdisciplinary mission: to bring together speakers representing all of the languages and area
studies in our department in order to foster dialogue between different fields and create a space for researchers to present their work.

Mentoring Program
Incoming students can be paired with an upperclass mentor This gives new students a specific point of contact to:
- Answer any questions about moving to Athens during the summer and giving advice about life here
before the semester starts
- Help them get an inside view of life in the department once they arrive
- Answer any academic questions about being a student here (recommendations for classes, tips for being
successful in classes etc.)
- Meet with informally for coffee to chat about how the transition to our department is going

Transportation - UGA bus and Athens Transit Bus
Beware of football game days (Saturdays in the Fall)! UGA buses are NOT running and city buses alter their routes and certain stops might not be served. UGA Bus is free for all the Athens community, no need to show/swipe a student ID card. Routes usually start at about 6.30 (depending on routes) and go until 1am M-F. Routes that stop by Gilbert Hall: Family and Graduate Housing (FGH), Health Sciences (HS), Milledge Avenue (M), Orbit (O), East West (EW). They offer overnight services (Overnight buses M-Th from 1am to 6am) and weekend services (Weekender North/South Buses) until 9.30/10pm Of interest: UGA FRESH BUS! This bus leaves campus from Graduate Housing, through campus,
- n the hour from 8am to 12pm to go to the Athens Farmer’s Market
when it is in opened (April/October) Athens Transit Bus - FREE with Student ID card to swipe as you get on. (Paid by your fees) Routes that stop by Gilbert Hall: #12, #14, #23, #28, Buses are offered on the hour from 6am to 10pm. Weekend services available.

Biking Most buildings at UGA provide bike racks and the city buses have bike racks. You can buy a recycled bike at Bike Athens (bikeathens.com), apply to be given one for free with the reCYCLE program at UGA. You can also check out a bike for free with “Bulldog Bikes” at UGA! You’ll have to register

- Your Graduate Coordinator will be in charge of clearing you when you sign up for classes and
signing multiple administrative forms. You will fill up a yellow sheet with the (3) courses you will take (In addition everyone enrolls into ROML 7005 and 7010 (M.A.) or ROML 9005 and 9010 (Ph.D.), “ghost course” : You have to attend three academic related events/talks and three professional development seminars).
- You will choose a major professor within your first year for both M.A. and Ph.D.
- Do not hesitate to attend your professor’s office hours (usually found on faculty’s departmental
webpage or syllabus). Emailing beforehand is a good idea.
- Essay guidelines: We use MLA for literature and APA for linguistics. If you are not sure about
how to format an essay, or how to properly use MLA/APA, do not hesitate to contact a
- professor. At the beginning of seminars, professors may say what they expect for future essays,
but they might not. Going to office hours to make sure your work meets their expectations is highly encouraged!

- Graduate Resident Assistant position in Mary Lyndon Hall : Semi-immersion on-campus program
for undergraduate students.
- Teach FREN/SPAN 2030: Conversation class meets once a week;
- French/Spanish Conversation Table once a week (This year Walker’s Coffee and Pub);
- 6 hours of office hours;
- Bi-weekly cultural activities;
- Free rent and paid regular stipend(!);
- More time to write and research.
- Summer Teaching assistantships to teach French or Spanish at UGA or online (requests for the summer
usually goes out in September!)

- FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies): Study Portuguese or Quechua language training
and Latin American area studies for an academic year and receive waived tuition and fees, and a $15,000 stipend. You will NOT teach for that academic year. Deadline mid-April.
- Research grants: LACSI Graduate Research Award, Willson Center for the Humanities and
Arts, Dean’s Award, Interdisciplinary and Innovative Research Grant, Saeeda Peermahomed International Student Award etc… Deadlines vary, status vary (M.A., Ph.D student, ABD).
- Semester of Research away with online TAship: New! Phd + ABD students *only* can apply to
do research outside of Athens for one semester, while still having an online TAship. Must have experience doing online teaching. Deadlines end of April.
- Other opportunities also include TAships in other departments (i.e. Film studies), minors or
certificates in other subjects (Women’s Studies Certificate, African American Studies Certificate etc…),
