The cave presents a stunning view, which is an interesting place from a geological and historical point

f view.

DATING 16th and 17th centuries HISTORICAL/SCIENTIFIC/ARTISTIC INFORMATION

The name of the cave comes from the use of it as a hiding place for bandits. The cave was formed due to a slow and constant erosive action exerted by the sea millions of years ago. The cavity opens up in the carbonate formation known as “Val Tanarello’s limestone”. This limestone was deposited in a low sea environment on the continental shelf between 140 and 150 million years ago. The cave is located at an altitude of about 60m from the Aurelia, therefore about 70m above current sea level.

CONDITION OF PRESERVATION

Before arriving at the cave you’ll see the remains of Santa Margherita’s church, which isn’t in a good

condition. The cave however is in a

good condition and is easy to get to.
