Objective ● To introduce the topic of infrastructure decay with a relevant current event to emphasize the importance of restoring and improving infrastructure in the future.

Background of Issue (3) 1. Supports a community 2. Includes water systems, road networks, gas grids, etc. 3. Old systems 4. Difficult to replace 5. Rely on infrastructure daily
Background cont. ● This has caused major safety problems for the public, sometimes resulting in death ● Examples of failures include: ○ I-35W Mississippi River Bridge collapse in 2007, killing 14 and injuring 100+ (4) ○ Stafford, NJ house explosion in 2015, injuring 15 (10)
Edgecumbe Floods, Background (1) ● In April, Tropical Cyclone Debbie slammed into the Pacific Nation of New Zealand bringing with her heavy winds and huge amounts of rain. ● The storm surge was one of the largest to ever impact the island nation. ● The storm’s unusual strength is credited by most scientists and meteorologists to be an impact of global climate change. ● Similar to in the United States, New Zealand’s infrastructure has hardly been updated since the mid 20th Century and has been neglected much in recent times.
Edgecumbe Floods NZ ● Major flooding occurred due to the tropical Cyclone ● Levees and storm walls were unable to cope with surge of water ● Pipes couldn’t handle influx of water ● Pipes were designed for few major flood events (1)
