SLIDE 4

Before we begin…

  • Let’s put things in perspective – school is not and should not be the highest priority for anyone right now

– The key for everyone is to stay Healthy and Safe.

  • Everyone in our country is stressed over many things right now. Families are in different places

regarding finances, work duties, personal responsibilities, and a wide range of other items. We, as a school district, want to keep things as simple as possible during this period for both you as a parent, and your child (children).

  • We know that nothing that we do during Remote Learning can come close to replacing the normal

classroom instruction that we provide.

  • Anything and Everything that you do as a parent to help your child (children) during these difficult times

is greatly appreciated.

  • Last but not least… Please tell your child (children) that we simply ask them to do the Best They Can!
slide-5
SLIDE 5

What is Remote Learning? And…Some General Recommendations

  • Remote Learning is any learning that happens outside the traditional

classroom.

  • During Remote Learning, the first priority is to keep our students physically

safe.

  • The focus should be on learning and not compliance or grading.
  • Both digital and non-digital materials are appropriate and acceptable.
slide-6
SLIDE 6

Successful Remote Learning Includes…

  • Options for students that consider ALL circumstances,

especially related to varying households.

  • A mix of instructional tools.
  • A common platform where parents and students can access

work, find support, and get resources. ○ District Website (discussed later)

  • Keeping IEP’s in place for Special Education Students

○ If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s case manager.

slide-7
SLIDE 7

Teacher Responsibilities

slide-8
SLIDE 8

Reed-Custer teachers will...

  • Find ways to communicate with students

(Communication plans will vary based upon grade level, course, etc…)

  • Make activities available in a timely manner
  • Be available to answer questions that students and parents might have
  • Provide feedback on student work (as possible)
  • Write directions as if a parent is not there to help
  • Focus on enrichment of current skills
  • Introduce minimal new concepts (only those necessary for grade level
  • r course advancement) – Remember, we completed nearly 80% of the year
  • Assist with attendance – Reach out to parents and students as needed
slide-9
SLIDE 9

Student Responsibilities

slide-10
SLIDE 10

We ask that all students...

  • Attempt to check-in to virtual meetings (we know that not

all students will be able to do this)

  • Review assigned work
  • Complete assigned work by the due date (Friday of each

week) if at all possible

  • Ask questions
  • Follow normal classroom expectations
slide-11
SLIDE 11

2 Big Questions

  • 1. What about students who do not have an

electronic device and/or access to reliable internet?

  • 2. How do we get hard copies of items to

students (if needed)?

slide-12
SLIDE 12

Electronic Devices - (Borrowed)

Once a student opens the “waffle” icon, all available Google Applications will appear. It is important to remember the first step is signing into Google using your student’s Reed-Custer Google Username and Password. The middle and high school building pages include resources to complete this process, including a step-by-step video tutorial.

Grading

  • We will follow the state’s guidance which

clearly states that... “no educational harm can come to any child” (with respect to their current academic status).

  • Failure to complete work will result in an

incomplete grade for the Remote Learning period and could result in other consequences (e.g. summer school, retention, not graduating, etc…) – each student will be looked at individually.

Grading Plan Details: RCES

slide-27
SLIDE 27

Grading Plan Details: RCES

  • If remote learning continues through the end of the school year, we will not be

adding 4th quarter/3rd trimester grades to the report card.

  • During the remote learning time, teachers will not be able to accurately assess if

students can independently and consistently demonstrate mastery of the standards.

  • Teachers will instead provide students and parents a written narrative that

summarizes the learning done in school during the first three quarters of the year, as well as during our remote learning time.

  • This narrative will include areas of strength as well as specific suggestions for

summer learning and areas for growth.

slide-28
SLIDE 28

Grading Plan Details: RCMS & RCHS

slide-29
SLIDE 29

A baseline grade will be determined for each child for each class/course.

  • High School: student’s current percentage as of 4/10/20
  • Middle School: student’s cumulative average for Quarters 1, 2, and 3

○ Students starting a brand new class for 4th Quarter will be Pass or Incomplete Teachers will enter one assignment per week: e.g. "Remote Learning Week of 4/13" Students will be given 1 grade per week throughout the entirety of the Remote Learning period.

  • Collected - “Pass”; this can also be used in the event of an illness or emergency situation.
  • Incomplete - The student submitted work that was not yet accepted by the teacher.
  • Missing - The student did not submit the assigned work.

If we go through the rest of the year under Remote Learning, we will use the following percentages: RCMS: 80% (Student's grade as of 4/10) and 20% (Remote Learning Grade)

  • Note: This will be the student’s final year-end grade
  • If we do not go back to school this year, there will be no Quarter 4 grade given

RCHS: 65% (Student’s grade as of 4/10) and 35% (Remote Learning Grade)

  • Note: This will be the student’s final Semester 2 Grade

Grading Plan Details: RCMS & RCHS

slide-30
SLIDE 30

Examples (Page 1)

Example 1: Joey is an RCMS student who has a 76% in 7th grade science. He finishes the Remote Learning period with an Incomplete notation, a Missing notation, and a few Collected Checkmarks. Joey did not successfully complete all responsibilities during Remote Learning, so he stays at a 76% for a final grade with the potential for consequences for incomplete work. Example 2: Mary is an RCMS student who has an 89% in 8th grade math. She successfully completes all work during the Remote Learning Period. This means that she has Collected Checkmarks recorded for each "weekly" assignment. Mary's final grade will be calculated as follows: 89% (.80) + 100% (.20) = 91.2% Mary's final grade has improved from 89% to 91.2%. Example 3: John is an RCHS student who has an 83% in Biology. He successfully completes all work during the Remote Learning Period. This means that he has Collected Checkmarks recorded for each "weekly" assignment. John’s Semester 2 final grade will be calculated as follows: 83% (.65) + 100% (.35) = 88.95% John’s Semester 2 grade has improved from 83% to 88.95%.

slide-31
SLIDE 31

Examples (Page 2)

Example 4: Travis is an RCHS student who has a 58% in Foods. He finishes the Remote Learning period with several Incomplete notations and a few Collected Checkmarks. Travis did not successfully complete all responsibilities during Remote Learning, so his Semester 2 final grade will be 58% with the potential for consequences for incomplete work. Example 5: (Teacher Subjectivity) Tyler had a 37% in English 10 prior to the mandatory closure. Tyler completed all required work during the Remote Learning period, meaning that he recorded a Collected Checkmark during each week. The math suggests the following: 37% (.65) + 100% (.35) = 59.05% Tyler’s teacher realizes that he is in danger of not passing, so she assigns extra work to Tyler. The teacher looks at the total package of Tyler’s work and effort during the Remote Learning period and makes a decision as to whether or not Tyler passes. Note: This allows students who cannot pass “mathematically” the opportunity to still pass a class.

SLIDE 32

Attendance

  • Attendance will be taken daily by the teacher in PowerSchool.
  • During a teacher’s Monday / Tuesday virtual meeting, teachers will see who

is present and document the absent students. All present students are considered present for the week.

  • If a student is not present during the virtual meeting, the teacher will attempt

to reach out to the student or parent that day. If the teacher contacts the student or parent, the student is counted present for the week.

  • If a teacher has trouble connecting with a student or parent, the administrator

will attempt to connect with the parent or student. If the administrator connects with the parent or student, the student will be present for the week.

  • If any student or parent picks up hard copies of materials, the student is

considered present for the week.
