A remote internship is a class of internship where you do not have to be physically present in the office or site while doing the internship. You may even do the internship while in almost any location as long as there is a computer and an internet

  • connection. There are many different professions

where virtual internships are possible.

Some internships may be difficult to replicate virtually. Other work can definitely be completed remotely (and has been). Most recently, Melbourne’s newspapers have predominantly been filed from home. Tasks that you can potentially complete remotely include: Writing & editing Interviewing Researching Database maintenance Social media strategy and analysis Social media posts → → → → → → IN THE ARTS

Always pitch yourself as someone coming in with

  • solutions. Ask yourself: what can I bring to add value to

this organisation? Right now might be time to take a bit more of a unique approach, and pitch an internship as a particular project. Examples: IN THE ARTS Could you mine an organisation’s online database for a series of historical stories? Could you do some remote work analysing clients social media platforms for a PR agency? Would they like a wrap up on what they have achieved in 10 years of business? → → →

While there are several benefits of virtual internships, not all students will benefit from their internship. Here are some attributes you must possess if you wish to benefit from this type of internship. Devotion Individuals need to be really committed to the internship if they really wish to benefit from it. Unlike onsite training, in these internships you do not have a supervisor to continuously monitor or check to see you are getting the work done. If you are not committed, you may miss the opportunity. The Right Attitude You need to possess the willingness to learn and the eagerness to explore alternatives. These are essential if you wish to gain valuable experience from the

  • internship. A causal attitude towards your

internship won’t help. → →
