Today’s Agenda • Designing for users in difficult circumstances • Case Study: Opioid Use Disorder
Case Study: Opioid Use Disorder • Focus on users recovering from opioid use disorder • Wanted to be able to identify posts on recovery in online communities • Wanted to investigate use of alternative treatments to overcome opioid use • Built a machine learning classifier to find posts on recovery on Reddit • Identified ~93K recovery related posts and 20 alternative treatment drugs • Provide implications for future research on opiod use disorder or medical interventions on online communities • Ethical considerations
Case Study: Opioid Use Discovery • Wanted to determine how to find posts on opioid recovery • Wanted to determine what alternative treatments people are using

Discussion points • Help to identify users who need help – Pros: can intervene – Cons: can be used by bad actors • Stigma and recovery • Understanding AT use • Using publicly available data
Why should be inclusive for users in difficult circumstances? • A lot of HCI research/design focuses on happy, ideal users • Ignores life’s up and downs • Users in difficult circumstances
Let’s think of difficult times in life…. • Spend 5 minutes chatting with your neighbors • Brainstorm 1-3 difficult times for users • What are research methods for investigating this problem? • Is it easy to access this population? • What are the ethical considerations? • Let’s share a few instances next
What about death and dying? • Will Odom and Mike Massimi • https://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/pdf/ 10.1162/DESI_a_00476 • Timecard
Other questions • What happens to a social media account when someone passes away? • Who should have access?
What are some useful techniques for designing for these circumstances? • Cultural probes (Gaver et al) • Provoke inspiration for design from users • Not overly constraining the suer
• Create materials which provoke answers • Not an interview/survey • E.g. disposable camera with prompt: – Take a picture of something that reminds you of a loved one you lost – Postcards • Result is inspiration not information • Can tell you more about emotions and context of users
Cultural probes • Pros? • Cons?
Summary • Real life means that we have to consider users through all circumstances • Some of these are difficult circumstances • Still have to design to accommodate these needs • Addiction, death, other life circumstances require mindful design • Cultural probes are one way to get ideas for inspiration in a non-traditional way
Coming up… • GP 4 video showcase on Monday • Talking about technology and harms…
