Project Need and Purpose

Existing US 59 within the project area does not meet criteria for an Interstate. The criteria includes:

  • Controlled access – access to main lanes only allowed via ramps
  • Roadway Geometrics - horizontal curvature and grades to meet 70mph

design speed

  • Main lane shoulders - minimum 4-foot inside shoulder and 10-foot
  • utside width
  • 30-foot horizontal clear zone requirements

Bring US 59 between Shepherd and Cleveland up to current interstate design standards providing system connectivity, enhanced safety, increased mobility and a more efficient hurricane evacuation route.

Project Development Schedule*

  • May 2019 – July 2019: Compile and consider public input from

tonight’s hearing and the public comment period and finalize schematic and environmental documentation.

  • Spring 2019 – Summer 2021: Complete right of way (ROW) map

and parcel descriptions; obtain ROW appraisals; acquire ROW and conduct relocations; and demolish acquired structures.

  • Summer 2019 – Early 2023: Prepare detailed engineering plans,

relocate utilities and obtain necessary environmental permits.

  • Spring 2023 – Spring 2027: Take bids on the proposed project and

begin construction. Construction is anticipated to take approximately 4 years.
