  1. Measuring Student Progress in Reading and Mathematics K-8 Presentation to the Board of Education, September 2014 Todd Winch, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction

  2. Overview of Student Performance in Reading and Mathematics K-8 • NWEA data continues to show below average scores in reading in most grades K-8 • Although concerns over validity exist, NYS ELA test scores show the same below average scores • Our lower NWEA reading data is supported by our lower high school SAT reading scores • Our NWEA Mathematics scores are higher, which support our higher NYS Mathematics test scores which in turn support our higher SAT Mathematics scores

  3. Analysis: • As shown by NWEA growth data, students continue to struggle greatest in reading across the district • Overall, students perform better in mathematics • Projected performance: NYS performance is, on average 5- 15 percentage points higher than NWEA projections.

District Action Plan • Reading & Writing: NYSED ELA Consultant working with the Middle School • teachers once per quarter this year Continued use and revision of pacing guides in • elementary classes to support Journeys programs • Elementary PLCs to focus on reading and writing throughout the year • Common Core ELA curriculum writing is ongoing in grades 6-8 • Infusion of NYS Module components continues in select elementary grades to supplement Journeys • Grade 5 Project Based Learning pilot at John H West Elementary School

  9. District Action Plan • Reading & Writing: Expanded use of eSpark support in grade 4 for ELA • • Afterschool ELA support in grades 3-5 • Potential for additional support program for students in grade 7 • Teacher committee review of grades 3-8 NYS assessments, specifically the 50 released questions from NYSED and Constructed Response questions Monthly administrative review of reading and writing • program K-8 Review/modification of Excelsior period in Grade 6- • primary focus will be reading and writing

  10. District Action Plan • Mathematics: Continued use and revision of pacing guides in • elementary classes to support GoMath programs Use of GoMath in grade 6 • • Common Core mathematics curriculum writing is ongoing in grades 6-11 Expanded use of eSpark support in grade 4 • • Afterschool mathematics support in grades 3-5 • Committee review of grades 3-8 NYS mathematics assessments

  11. How Will We Measure Our Success? Instruments: • • NYS ELA & NWEA • Targets: Increase in NWEA Growth Percentile • Increase in NWEA Projected Performance • Increase in average score on constructed response portion • of NYS ELA assessment in grade six and seven. • Increase in NYS ELA performance relative to Nassau County average. • Timeframe: Spring/Summer 2015
